I think that had Obama lost the last two debates we'd be looking at President Romney (thanks binders full of women!). So it was definitely closer than you're making it out to be. As to media outlets bending over backwards to make Trump look legitimate, if that were true they'd be spending more time hammering Hillary to bring her down. The big difference post convention is her net approval has improved between 6 and 10 points depending on the poll, while Trump's is the same or worse. There's almost nothing the media can do to make Trump look legitimate, other than hammering Hillary which they haven't done outside the usual GOP forces (like Hannity this week having "medical experts" on to dissect Hillary's health).

If Trump is constanly "joking" or being "sarcastic", how can anyone trust anything he says?
"I will help the poor..."
"I was being sarcastic!"

Trump all over the map with his speech again. Jerbs jerbs then switches to building up the military and making it great to massive cheers then back to jerbs.

I think Trump is losing his mind.
Probably thinks the polls are the fault of the people trying to control him to get on message.

Trump is giving every conceivable signal to the GOP that he wants out of this race, yet they seemingly refuse to do anything about it.

They can't ask him or tell him, he needs to quit on his own.
Also, I don't think the GOP is crazy about running with a different candidate anymore. Their other guys already lost to this guy. The new guy would be at a huge disadvantage, having to quickly staff and fund a huge campaign. And if the new guy lost, the optics would be even worse for the GOP.
Trump was not favoured by large parts of the party elite. Everyone knows this. They can with some credibility distance themselves from the upcoming loss in a way they couldn't do with another candidate.
At this point it's probably just best for them to focus on minimizing the losses and blame everything on Trump alone.

Who would they run? Both Rubio and Cruz would still likely get smoked by Clinton. Better to keep Ryan tucked away for 2020.

Trump is the worst candidate ever and he was polling basically even with Hillary before his total meltdown these last few weeks. If the GOP fields Rubio or Ryan I think they have a pretty decent chance of winning. You have to remember swapping Trump out means the entire conversation switches to being about Trump's ridiculousness back to focusing more on Hillary. And that's a problem for the Dems.

Unless Trump runs as a 3rd party. Could he? If he could he'd steal votes.

He could put Arizona, Georgia, Utah, and even Kansas into play.
I think HRC will win 40ish states.

Yeah judging by the all-in nature of the current American political climate, one would guess that if Trump left/got the boot, a lot of crazy people would follow him out the door.

It will cost him tons of his own money to run third party, so that's never happening. Oh and this happened at that rally...

Michael Moore wrote a letter to Ivanka asking her to intervene because it's obvious her dad has serious mental issues. GOP can dump him by adding a mandatory mental health exam for all candidates. Trump would fail spectacularly.

Not now though with no time to organize. There's just not enough time anymore to start a new campaign
