The current Flames defense is one of the lightest d corps that Sutter has coached in the past 25 years. The average weight is 210lbs with everyone except Gilbert and Zadorov weighing less than the average (Zadorov is that massive). If you add in Kylington, it becomes the lightest d corps that Sutter has coached since the late 90s.

The last time Sutter won the cup, the average weight on the backend was 220lbs with Voynov being the only dman under 210lbs.

Maybe there is some fire to the Weegar rumor if Weegar can return an upgrade at one of the forward wing spots while Treliving adds more size to the backend via Schenn.

I don't agree with trading Weegar, but he is relatively small and not a Sutter player.

Why would you need to choose though.

Tanev will be 35 turning 36 at the expiry of his deal in 2 years. He probably doesn't need a contract.

We have very few d-men prospects coming up the pipeline.

If you're not planning to re-build then Andersson and Weegar are the longer term core of this defense.

Andersson: 3 x $4.55M
Weegar: 8 x $6.25M

And really both of them for a combined $10.8M for the next three seasons after this one is great value.

If you can extend Hanifin for around the same as Weegar then that would be fine.

Even if Hanifin is $7M then $18M for Weegar, Hanifin, and Andersson is great value under what will likely be close to a $90M cap by then.

How is Weegar not a Sutter player?

Second on the team in hits to only Zadorov (103 vs 101)

Stout defensively. Erases zone entries, strong first pass.

Leads the team in CF%, Fenwick For%, Shots For%, and is second in xGF%.

Issue being he's had some terrible on ice luck with a .899 save percentage, and 6.74 shooting percentage (similar to Tanev who has also been just as unlucky).

I would consider Weegar to the Sens for their 23 1st and Zaitsev. Get a top 12 pick in the draft and not have Weegar on the books at $6.25M until he is 37. The use Zaitsev’s deal in a move to get Boeser.

Just for fun:

To Ottawa: Weegar
To Calgary: 23 1st + Zaitsev

To Calgary: Boeser + Schenn
To Vancouver: Zaitsev + 2nd + B prospect
I would want Shane Pinto from Ottawa.

Seems to be an extension for Mikey Anderson (8 years?), who is this guy? $4.1M AAV

I would be cool with that but I feel Ottawa is in the full on win now approach and would rather part with picks than young talent on their roster.

Upgrading from a boat anchor contract of Zaitsev to Weegar should cost a potential high 1st rounder. Getting Pinto could open up opportunities to be more comfortable trading Lindholm in the summer instead of extending him to a massive contract that kicks in months before he is 30 years old.

I don’t buy much of this report from the 4th period but with that said the Flames not being happy with their new mix after the summer of change makes sense and I could see them looking at making some significant changes.

Blue Jackets looking for a 3 asset return for Gavrikov, including a 2023 1st rounder. Looks like the market is ripe for slightly above average defensive dman. I wonder what it would be for an actual good defensive dman.

If GMs end up trade a 1st round pick for Gavrikov after what happened last season with Chiarot and everyone telling them not to trade for him, I would be absolutely bewildered.

But NHL GMs continue to surprise in all the wrong ways.

Hanifin is younger so that's the big advantage.
Weegar is a RS dman which is usually coveted.
Weegar is also capable of playing both sides, which is extremely beneficial. It helps with injuries and/or new guys coming in and playing the side they’re most comfortable with.

Still don't get some people's desire to fire Sutter.

Literally give the Flames even slightly-below average goaltending and they're comfortably in a Playoff spot.

I'm not down to fire the GOAT Flames coach just because Markstrom has been ####.

Because there has been a ton of smoke about players not wanting to play for him. I'm not going to get into specific players but I have it on good authority that they are tired of his antics, many of which are not shown publicly.

I wonder if the Flames are looking at Alex DeBrincat? RW, former 40 goal scorer could be just what the doctor ordered. He's on a expiring deal and Flames would have to move Weegar to fit an extension maybe?

Now that's a whole different discussion.

DeBrincat for Weegar ... then sure, especially if Debrincat comes with an extension.

Weegar for 1st + Zaitsev... no thank you.
