That sucks about your family, dude. Hope your wife's neck gets better and that's infuriating that the accident was caused by lack of attention or distracted driving - either way, totally unacceptable when driving anything, let alone such a big and heavy vehicle.
As for the teacher owning it...IDK, it's not a crazy vehicle for a teacher. They get the entire summer off (is it nine weeks?), so I can see owning an RV and touring all over North America during that vacation time. A truck is ideal for pulling a trailer and bringing your toys/goodies in the box. They can also be pretty fuel efficient for what they are, so you don't save anything by owning the truck and a smaller commuter car...the truck can do double duty.
That's an aside, though. I don't even particularly like trucks, myself, and own an F-150 for my business simply because I have to. The accident is a total piss off.

I mean sure. A.I. will make mistakes, and not see Oiler jerseys in crosswalks, but the odd glitch is a low price for getting rid of distracted, drunk, angry, incompetent meatbags who would rather not be driving anyway.

You could have installed a solution into your old car for less than $1K including having someone install it for you (probably closer to half if you could DIY). They're amazing upgrades to old cars, rapidly getting cheaper and other than the back up cameras having a wee bit of extra complexity, the rest is basically mount and ready to go out of the box.
For a few hundred dollars with something like this:
https://www.amazon.ca/Rearview-Recor...f-fa04f1ca0da8
Simultaneous front and back recording dash cams, back up cam. $100 all in for the hardware. DIY or pay someone to install for you.
For a few hundred more you could probably get something that also has sensors that mounts into the stereo unit screen. My parents have something like this in their vehicle, but it's older so no integrated Carplay or Android Auto. If you don't need the sensors and rear dash recording, something like this is pretty nifty for bridging the features gap between a decade old car to a newer car with a front recording dash cam, back up cam and wireless Carplay and android auto. This is what I put in recently into my car and it only cost $220.

I'm sure there's other reasons why you traded in. Just saying it's an option, especially probably for those with tighter budgets and/or parents who will have kids driving older vehicles without these features.
If someone installed these, the only other upgrade I'd recommend is the car battery. These units will increase the drain to those batteries, so you might want to replace batteries over 5 years old as a precaution + have a trickle charger on hand to top it up once or twice per winter just before a cold snap.

All these cars are fine as long as the gas tank is on the left

This sounds like a great premise for a Black Mirror episode.
"All the world has self-driving cars...with one... fatal flaw...Oilers jerseys cause them to accelerate uncontrollably!"
I'd watch it.

I hope your family is ok.
If they aren't make sure you explore the claims you can make against the other driver and your own policy.

Thanks for this - good research. I want the thing that yanks the wheel out of the wife's hand when she's putting on eyeshadow and drifts into the other lane too.

How long is that “left lane ends” sign going to stay up on NB Deerfoot near McKnight, despite the left lane not ending?

Till they get around to ending it?
Nothing better than lane closures, pylons, and not a soul in sight working.

People who drive to the end of a merge lane and sit there until every last car has passed them should have their license revoked entirely.

Same dumb f***s who sit there with their neck cranked backwards. Didn't use their mirror once, no attempt to merge properly.

Oh, there’s construction, but the lane never ends. It’s weird because they could just flip the sign over until they actually begin the work.

They could. But that's not part of their job description anymore so those lane end signs stay up until the entire project is over, and then after a few months the contracted sign crew comes around and takes 3/4 of the stuff away.

How illegal is it to go rogue and just tip those signs over ourselves? I nominate Wormius.
