Last time, I said I made the steal of the draft....this is the steal of the draft 1A.

Cyclones are a tiny bit excited to steal G-2, Tiny Thompson

The brother of New York Rangers and Chicago Black Hawks forward Paul, Cecil "Tiny" Thompson spent most of his career with the Boston Bruins. His spectacular play was exceeded only by his endurance. During his 12-year NHL career, Thompson led all goalies in games played nine times, while his four Vezina Trophy wins stood as the NHL standard until 1949, when Montreal's Bill Durnan won his fifth.

After gaining experience with the Calgary Monarchs, Pacific Grain Seniors and Bellevue Bulldogs of the Alberta Senior Hockey League, Thompson left the nest to further his development. He spent a year with the Duluth Hornets of the United States Amateur Hockey Association before moving on to the Minneapolis Millers. It was in Duluth that Thompson purchased the leg pads he used throughout his pro career. In 1927-28, in the renamed American Hockey Association, he recorded a league-leading 28 wins in 40 matches for the Minnesota squad. The next year, joined by Minneapolis teammate Ralph "Cooney" Weiland, he embarked on a stellar NHL career with the Bruins.

Few players have made a bigger impact in their rookie season. After Boston coach Cy Denneny opted to start him in the season opener ahead of incumbent Hal Winkler, Thompson's glorious career was launched. He posted a stingy 1.15 goals against mark and led Boston to 26 wins while appearing in all 44 games. In the playoffs, he helped the Bruins win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. In the finals against the Rangers, he faced his brother Paul in the only sibling confrontation in the playoffs until the Esposito brothers some 40 years later.

During his sophomore season, Thompson was forced to adjust to a more wide-open style of play as the NHL revised its forward-passing rules. His goals-against average grew to 2.19, but it stood as the league's best - the first of four times Tiny would lead this category.

The 1929-30 version of the Beantowners dominated the regular-season standings, and Thompson's 38-5-1 record was one of the most impressive in league history, but Boston was stunned by the Montreal Canadiens in the finals. With Thompson guarding the cage, Boston finished atop the NHL's American Division six times, but he'd never again led them to a Cup victory.

In 1930-31, the nervous netminder's anxiety got the better of him for a short stretch of the season and Percy Jackson had to be pressed into action. Fortunately Thompson's health improved and in 1932-33 he led the NHL with a career-high 11 shutouts.

On April 3, 1933, Thompson made history as the losing goaltender in the longest playoff game to that date, a match that was dubbed "the Ken Doraty Derby." In the fifth and deciding game of the Bruins' semifinal series with Toronto, both teams were held scoreless throughout regulation time as Tiny and his opposite number, Lorne Chabot, played superbly. The deadlock held through 104 minutes and 46 seconds of overtime before the Leafs' Doraty beat an exhausted Thompson.

During the 1935-36 season, Thompson entered the record book when he fed a pass to defenseman Babe Siebert, who went on to score. Thompson became the first goalie ever to earn an assist in the NHL. In 1938 he and brother Paul, then in Chicago, were both named to the First All-Star Team - only the second such brother act after Lionel and Charlie Conacher.
Thompson sat out two games at the start of the 1938-39 season because his eyes were bothering him. A young American by the name of Frank Brimsek stepped in and played so well that Bruins chief Art Ross decided he represented the club's goalkeeping future. On November 16, 1938, a Bruins era ended when Thompson was traded to Detroit for fellow netminder Norman Smith and $15,000. Thompson played 39 games that year for the Red Wings and a full season the next. After trying in vain to help Detroit upset the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1940 semifinals, Thompson left the NHL. He later played one game with the Buffalo Bisons of the American league in 1940-41 and a handful of contests for the Calgary RCAF Mustangs during World War II. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1959.

With our 21st Round pick, Punk's Puckers select:

On Defence

Steve Duchesne

Duchesne started off his notable hockey career with the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He was not drafted, but was signed by the Los Angeles Kings on October 1, 1984. He played a season with the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League before becoming an NHL regular in 1986–87. In his first season, he played so well that he was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. It did not take Duchesne long to establish himself as an above average offensive defenceman. In the 1988–89 NHL season, he led all defensemen in shorthanded goals (5).
He played with the Kings until May 30, 1991, when he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in a deal that brought Jari Kurri to Los Angeles. Duchesne played one season in Philadelphia, before being traded to the Quebec Nordiques with a huge package of players for young phenom Eric Lindros. Although Duchesne set a career high with 82 points in Quebec, he was again traded after the season was done to the St. Louis Blues. He played two seasons with the Blues before getting traded to the Ottawa Senators, then after two seasons with the Senators he was traded back to the Blues for Igor Kravchuk. Duchesne's journeyman status continued, as he signed as a free agent back with the Kings after one season with the Blues, and then during his first season back with the Kings, he was traded to the Flyers at the trading deadline. Finally, after the 1998–99 season, Duchesne signed as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings, where he would win a Stanley Cup in his final season, 2001–02. Steve now resides in Dallas, Texas with his wife and two children and coaches the U18 Dallas Stars Midget Major AAA hockey team.

For our last right winger, a guy who played and had great success with Frank McGee, Alf Smith

Alf Smith began playing competitive hockey in his teens, starring with the Ottawa Electrics in the city league before moving up to the Ottawa Capitals, still an amateur team, in 1892. He played his first professional hockey at the turn of the century, skating for most of one season with Pittsburgh in the International Hockey League.

After taking a break from the game, Smith played with the Ottawa Hockey Club of the Canadian Amateur Hockey League and helped build the team into the powerhouse that became known as the "Silver Seven."' In 1903 he captained the team to the first of three successive Stanley Cup victories. The Silver Seven played in what was considered the first professional hockey league in Canada. Smith played on a line with Frank McGee, making room for his talented teammate with his bruising style. Later his brother Harry took up a position on his line and the siblings had great success.

In 1906 Alf led a group of players in starting a second Ottawa team that played in the Federal Amateur Hockey League as the Senators. When the Senators were defeated in the 1907 playoffs by the Montreal Wanderers, Smith and teammate Harry "Rat" Westwick joined the Kenora Thistles, the team that had defeated the Silver Seven for the Stanley Cup the year before. The Thistles also lost to the eventual champion Wanderers and Smith returned to Ottawa. Continuing to play for the Senators, Smith also coached, capturing the inaugural Allan Cup with the Ottawa Cliffsides in 1908. The following year he moved south one more time and played a season for the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. He then retired as a player and turned his attention full-time to coaching.

Smith's coaching experience included the Renfrew Millionaires, a celebrated squad that featured some of the game's greatest early stars, and the Ottawa Senators in the newly formed National Hockey League. He was also the first coach of the New York Americans when the team joined the NHL in 1926.

Alf Smith stayed in hockey for most of his life, coaching and managing teams in Moncton, New Brunswick, and North Bay, Ontario. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on June 6, 1962, nine years after his death in 1953 at the age of 80.

Team Modern Era selects...

D Sandis Ozolinsh

Sandis Ozoliņš (pronounced /sɑn.dɪs oʊzoʊ.lɪntʃ/, born August 3, 1972 in Riga, U.S.S.R.), also known as Sandis Ozolinsh, is a Latvian ice hockey player, currently an unrestricted free agent. He is a 7-time NHL All-Star, Norris trophy finalist, the all-time highest scoring Latvian in the NHL and the second highest paid sportsman in Latvian history after NBA Basketball player Andris Biedrins.

Ozolinsh was one of 3 finalists for the Norris Trophy (the NHL award given to the best defencemen in the NHL) in the 1996–97 season. He is also a 7-time NHL All-Star.
When on the Colorado Avalanche, he won his one and only Stanley Cup (1996). He was a part of Anaheim's Cinderella run to the Finals in 2003. In December 2005, Ozolinsh missed a practice skate and failed to go on a short road trip with the team. Shortly after, he voluntarily entered the NHL's substance abuse program, and was placed indefinitely on the disabled list.

He was traded from the Ducks to the New York Rangers for a third-round draft pick (which the Rangers had obtained earlier in a trade with the San Jose Sharks) at the March 9, 2006 trade deadline. On December 18, 2006, on the heels of a 6–1 loss to New Jersey, the Rangers placed Ozolinsh on waivers. After clearing waivers, Ozolinsh was assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL, but a short while later he was put on injured reserve instead.

Ozolinsh is also the owner of Vilki OP/LaRocca of the Riga Open Championship. Ozolinsh also owns other Latvian sports ventures, including Latvia's first 18-hole golf course, Ozo Golf Club.

He signed a one-year contract with the Sharks on November 2, 2007 and scored 3 goals and gave 13 assists in 38 games.

alrighty then.

Team Toe Blake rounds out it's defense with Mathieu Schneider

Drafted in the third round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, 44th overall, by the Montreal Canadiens, Schneider was the Canadiens' fourth pick (after forwards Andrew Cassels and John LeClair, and fellow defenseman Éric Desjardins). He played his first NHL game a few months later when he suited up on 1987–88 opening night against the Philadelphia Flyers. However, after four games, he was sent back to his junior team (Cornwall Royals) for the rest of the season. He would spend the entirety of 1988–89 with Cornwall before splitting the next season between Montreal and their American Hockey League farm team, the Sherbrooke Canadiens. After being promoted to the Canadiens, he scored seven goals and 21 points in 44 games with Montreal.
Schneider earned a full-time NHL roster spot in the 1990–91 season and, two years later, he won the 1993 Stanley Cup with the Canadiens, defeating Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in five games. Following his Stanley Cup victory, Schneider broke out with 52 points in 1993–94, topping all team defencemen.
During the the 1994–95 sesaon, Schneider was traded to the New York Islanders finishing the season with 29 points in 43 games between the two clubs. In 1995-96, he recorded 47 points in 65 games with the Islanders and appeared in his first NHL All-Star Game (1996), before being traded in March 1996 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for three players and a first round selection in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft (eventually Roberto Luongo).[1] He finished the year with 54 points in 78 games between the two clubs.

Prior to the 1996–97 season, Schneider was a member of the 1996 World Cup champion Team USA squad. It was his high point for the season as he suffered a serious groin injury and was lost for the majority of the season, playing only 26 games.[1] He returned to the Leafs from his injury the following season and tallied 37 points in 76 games. He was a contract-hold out as a restricted free agent prior to the 1998–99 season, reportedly seeking a $3.3 million salary with the Maple Leafs. Consequently, a few games into the season, the Maple Leafs traded him to the New York Rangers where he then signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract. Born in Manhattan, Schneider stated his excitement to be playing for his hometown team.[2] In two seasons with the Rangers he accumulated 34, then 30 points.

The Beantown Bruins are proud to have as their coach the 4th winningest coach in NHL history, Iron Mike Keenan.

He is a harda$$ that will keep everyone in line, or break a stick against the boards trying.

Backup Goalie: Ed Giacomin

I left the backup for almost last, thinking "ah, what the hell, we're only picking 32 goalies, there will be someone left when I get there". Now I think my backup might be better than my starter.

Yeah, you are probably right. I'm just trying to make myself look smart by taking such a great goalie at this late stage. You've taken that away from me. Thanks a lot.

This is the first time I've opened this thread in over a month...

Without wanting to get into too many personal details, I've been laid off from my job. Money was tight, the hammer had to fall on someone...

When they chose me, one of the reasons they gave was the insane amount of posting I was doing on this board during the day. They had a bloody printout of my stats from my user profile here, for crying out loud.

Anyway, there were other reasons... like I was the highest paid employee and the office manager has always had a bit of bone to pick with IT people, etc etc.

Long story short, I walked away from CP for a bit, and then slowly creeped back into the main forum for game threads, etc. It's only been recently that I've ventured into other sections and today is the first time I've even felt like opening this thread.

I know, I know. I signed up. I put my name down. I should have stuck it through... Let's just say, I kinda lost my taste for it all.

PS: Btw, I checked it out, and it just so happens that you get access to all kinds of information about posting habits here without even having a member's account yourself. Just something to keep in mind for anyone worried about how much they post here during the day. All it takes is knowing your board ID, and they've got all the case they need. They don't even need to worry about internal ip/server logs.
