Oh wow. That's absolutely hilarious.
Bring in journeyman Shawn freaking Camp to diffuse that situation. This loss is on Cito.

In his defense the game is already over, we never score 3 runs in a game!

It was 1-1 when Camp came in.
It baffles me how stupid MLB managers are sometimes.

Why did Cito pich Downs last night with a 4 run lead? We couldn't use him today (back-to-back-to-back games).

The whole ego thing or whatever it is to get a recordable statistic is a touch rediculous. Say you bring in your closer to face Ordonez, Cabrera, Sheffield with a runner on base and he get's them out. So what if they're the 23,24 & 25 outs of the game. Those were far more critical to being able to win than letting someone else get those guys and have your main guy get the 7-8-9 hitters out to finish the game the next inning. Yet I don't think you ever see teams employ a strategy like that.

I'm thinking a 45 minute rain delay that took the starter out of the game after 6 innings was a factor there. Big difference to try and get 3 innings from your pen instead of 2.

It's not a touch ridiculous - it's just downright stupid. Saves are right up there with RBIs as the most useless stat in baseball.
You never see teams employ that strategy because managers manage to save their jobs, not to win ball games. Honestly though, today's decision had very little to do with that. It was just plain ignorance. I could understand if there's no outs and the bases loaded in the 8th and Ryan might have to work two full innings, but it was really one batter in the bottom of the 8th. If Ryan doesn't get Renteria out then the Tigers take the lead and the game is over considering the Jays offense. If he does get him out, Ryan has to go an inhuman 1 .1 innings.
Here's two good columns ESPN ran lately on how over-rated closers are:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...5&sportCat=mlb
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...e=caple/080805
The closer role is based completely around money.
More saves = bigger salary.
Bigger Salary = whiny closers who won't enter a game if it might cost them a save
The save is just like most things in baseball - ignorant decisions made based off traditional logic.

Ah, I didn't realize that.
Either way, Frasor or Camp aren't guys who should be left in high leverage situations in the 8th inning.

Downs is hurt btw, he hurt his foot last night covering a base. That's why he didnt pitch today
Quote:
Scott Downs is likely headed to the disabled list after spraining his ankle on Wednesday night.
Downs, who injured his foot backing up a base, was on crutches as he left the stadium on Wednesday night. It's a big loss for Toronto, as Downs had a 0.78 ERA in his last 43 appearances. The team could promote John Parrish to take his spot on the roster, with Jesse Carlson seeing more action in the eighth.

With the MLB trade deadline in the rearview mirror, teams are now looking at the trade waiver wire to stock their roster for an October run. And some of the names being dangled may surprise you.
The Toronto Sun is reporting that the Jays asked trade waivers on both Vernon Wells and John McDonald on Tuesday, and it's unsure either would clear.

Jays sent down former Cracker-Cat and non-Olympian Scott Richmond today. Good thing the (non contending) Jays got 3 starts out of him.

######bag move by JP, but at the same time maybe the kid would rather get paid than lose at the olympics. I could see it either way. I want JP fired as much as the next guy, but sometimes people act like every move he makes puts him one step closer to being the antichrist.

Nah, not the anti-christ, and I understand a MLB organization is going to do what is best for the MLB organization like the Rockies did with Jeff Francis in '04 but I'm a fan of the Canadian team, the Jays, and Richmond from his days in Edmonton. And I wanted to see him in Beijing where we have medal aspirations not in Toronto where the team is going nowhere.

Richmond could easily be a career minor leaguer.
I'm sure he'd rather have those 3 starts in the MLB than pitch in a tournament that most baseball players/people couldn't care less about.

Well just another day at the ol job for Halladay. Complete game gives up a home run to Pedrioa in the 9th and not much else. He won't edge out Cliff Lee for the Cy Young this year, but this might be as well as he's pitched the way he's throwing right now.

Well, the Jays are knocking around the Red Sox quite a bit today.
It's 11-2 right now in the 7th inning. The Jays started off the 1st with a 6-run inning against Beckett.
Rios has 4 doubles and Lind just needs a triple to hit for the cycle.
