He's not signed and the Flames hold his rights until August 15th 2027

Would you rather have 34 + 44 + 47 or 17?
Pretty even value, but with the way the Flames draft lately I think I like more bullets in the chamber myself

Depends on the draft.
But A) this draft is apparently deep but lacks high end (so the 3 2nds), and B) the Ruck twins (so the 3 2nds are potentially very useful)

The logical assumptions is that CC wanted these picks, specifically this year and has a plan.
They didn't have to trade Weegar, he wasn't asking to leave (at far as we know) and it's very unlikely CC initiated the trade talks to get the prospect.
So 99.9% this is by design to specifically get picks in this draft; or it wouldn't have even started.
Everyone wants to judge the trade immediately, but it comes down to what these picks are used for as that's the entire play.

This is the night that the retool became a rebuild.

I guess being Utah's 10th best prospect isn't too bad considering the strength of their cupboard.

Take the Ruck's at 44 and 47 although that may be too late for Liam.

I hate to keep bringing it up, but Weegar has been really bad this season.
I get the concern with trading him at his lowest value, but it's also possible that if this continues, his value right now is higher than it will be going forward. The Flames may have been looking to give his contract away next season at his age and remaining term.
I think it's a fair trade and hedges that significant downside risk.

According to the puckpedia calculator the 3 2nds are worth slightly less. The difference is a 4th(#118)

Plus 2 early picks in the 3rd lol.
If they trade Kadri and Coleman, the Flames could conceivably own 1/7 of the top 70ish picks lol. That's crazy.

I suspect we see Castagna and Wiebe both signed as soon as their college seasons are over.

Per The Athletic’s season end projection, the picks will be close to 37 (NYR), 49 (UTA), 51 (OTT).
And using the expected value of each draft pick, also from The Athletic, the expected value of 37 + 49 + 51 is equivalent to the expected value of the 12th-overall pick.

Paul Byron wasn’t 6’2” 200+ pounds. But if this kid ends up scoring 20 goals in 6 years or so, great.
Flames are thin down the middle in prospects so that’s a factor too.

Based on what exactly? We haven’t drafted an impact player since Tkachuk in 2016. You can argue that we haven’t had great picks, but you can’t call us a great drafter when you haven’t drafted an impact player in 10 years. You can argue that the trajectory of recent picks looks good, but until those turn into impact players, you can’t call us a great drafter.

I was more thinking about the odds of a `17 OA pick making the NHL v those three picks getting one player there but maybe that’s what they are doing.
