Another disappointing thing to highlight: Don Maloney admitted in his "exclusive" interview with Steinberg that ownership originally asked if he would be the GM. That's pretty crazy.
Having enough self-awareness, Maloney scoffed at the idea and suggested they look at more progressive, "younger" candidates.

I feel like he built a beast ass team. If Tkachuk and Gaudreau and O.K. were still playing here, we would be really good, with some great prospects filling the few holes the team had. D was pretty solid, we have Duehr, Pelletier, Coronato, Philips, Zary, etc. All ready to fill in. I personally think the team would have been incredible.
Alas, a perfect storm occurred, yes, somewhat self-inflicted but far from anticipated. Now everything is changed and the negatives are magnified greatly. He did a damn good job and was right on the edge of success. This season he realized the curve ball that occurred basically put him in the position to start back over again. Perfect time to leave IMO. Sad though.
I just hope we get someone genuinely GOOD at their job again.

Flames and Treliving agree to part ways. Maloney promoted to PoHO and interim GM
Huge concern with this news if Sutter and the rest of the coaching staff are still part of this organization going forward after Tre decided to leave.
We could descend to new lows as a franchise unless there is a strong vision and plan for this team’s future.
Honestly it’s already started and I want Maloney to prove me wrong, however the next huge decision is interviewing and selecting a GM.
The on ice product this past season was difficult to watch at times as the style of hockey was the antithesis of exciting.
While people can debate certain aspects of the on ice product, the off ice issues shone through on garbage bag day.
Selecting a GM with a vision and plan going forward is a crucial step, as it’s clear some of the long time players like Backlund are not happy, which should be a clear signal for Maloney that the players need a staff that listens and puts players in their best position to succeed.
Thinking back to Phillips call up and essentially being benched seemed like the beginning of the end between Tre and Sutter.
The handling of the younger players in our organization goes hand in hand with this team’s future, hence a GM with a vision, a plan, and the support of their coaches to carry it out.

That Maloney news is actually good. Maybe he'll continue to tell ownership the truth.

On a positive note that is encouraging that Maloney could be the right guy to pick the next GM with that type of awareness

On one side I am pissed in general about this situation. A GM has a vision to build around the 2 best players and they choose not to stay. It was an impressive pivot last summer getting Huberdeau and Weegar ++ for Chucky and then signing Kadri seemed to set the team up to be better but an 18pt drop in the standings resulted in the dreaded spot of being the team outside the playoffs with the best record. He made a pivot and that move resulted in 3 long term contracts and 2 already look borderline terrible.
The Sutter era in early 2000’s helped restore the team but when it ended the team was a laughing stock especially when Jay Feaster tried to keep pushing forward with the same group. I think the Burke and Treliving era brought that respect back to the franchise.
I always thought Treliving and Maloney were a package deal but I was clearly wrong. While I expect Sutter to be back it will be interesting to see what other changes are made.
|
I think it is bad optics to keep Sutter at the helm. The real failure wasn't Treliving but Sutter who couldn't get his players accross the finish line and may have hampered the process himself. Flames need a fresh start with an exciting up and coming team. I think the fans would embrace that. Can't imagine what it would be like to go through another middle of the pack finish.

Wow. Just watched that press conference. What a ####ing mess. And if Bean has any say on the teams direction - good ####ing lord this team is ####ed.
edit: hopefully the team just fails its way to a good draft pick - would seem inevitable at this point

I don’t want to tip my hand but I have insider knowledge that Brad has enough financing and connections to open a Boston Pizza Franchise in Northern BC. He’ll be okay and will land on his feet. Good head on his shoulders that guy. All the best Brad

I think its fair to say nobody believed in the process as much as Treliving.

Late to the party but put me in the “disappointed but not surprised” camp. I’m at a loss for words with this organization.
They won’t win anything as long as Edwards is calling the shots.

Man, watching that presser, it just looks like an organization that's reeling.
I think they have to accept the stars have aligned, and this team needs to be razed almost to the ground over the summer and rebuilt - along with its confidence and identity - from the foundation up.
Huberdeau and Kadri have to be wondering if they're going to be playing out their days on a team that has a winning horizon that coincides with the end of their currently untradeable contracts.

I wouldn’t mind keeping Huberdeau around to play with the up and coming youngsters. I can’t help but think he would be good for their development.

Considering Jim is 81 and has 435 restaurants worth $700m it doesn't take insider knowledge or reach to see he'll be OK.

This makes me like Maloney even more. Hopefully he can stick it to ownership consistently when they suggest something stupid
