The new arena seems to be on the lower/mid level of budgets (atleast compared to the really nice arenas in the league) so I'm not expecting gold urinals.

I hope you're right though, as this is a design that would really benefit from quality materials and attention to detail, as the forms themselves aren't particularly interesting.
to be fair, the scales of the project were quite different.

Calgary was a new building. Edmonton was working with a major rehabilitation to an existing Brutalist building...so most primary structure was already sunk cost for Edmonton. CMLC definitely was a different kind of client than typical institutional clients, though they are a part of the government, they had a bit more autonomy in delivering the project.

Working on existing buildings is a challenge in and of themselves though: I'd rather not do another renovation project in my lifetime if I could avoid it...

Keeping the Corral name would be fantastic but I don’t know how broadly popular it would be. Do enough people still have a connection to it?

Even if lots of citizens in the city don't even know what The Corral is, I still think it would be nice to have it in the name so then it can have a nickname that the general Calgarian will become accustomed to calling it that.

I wish that Montreal called their arena the Bell Forum, and Toronto did Scotiabank Gardens. Or even Scotiabank Centre at Maple Leafs Gardens. Let's bring in identity, and pay homage to franchise's history by letting the names provide flavour; since every arena now looks the same from the inside.

As others have mentioned, I think it would be really cool if they recreated and installed the neon cowboy from The Corral on one of the many blank walls on the south/east side of the arena. I also agree that Corral would be a really great name. I'm partial to the Westjet Corral myself! Come of Flames, lets get this right!

I think it should be the Memorial Corral.

From my understanding, Dialog was just the local partner to assist with coordination and compliance and some of the interior design of the library.

Calgary's Central Library was primarily designed by Snohetta. I personally am not a fan of most of Dialog's work and Dialog is the primary on the new arena.

You see this often with projects. There's a prestige international designer and then a local partner whether an architecture/design firm or developer comes in and cost manages the building to hell.

One that comes to mind for me is West Village Towers which was designed by NORR Dubai Yahya Jan but when I checked out the interior, Cidex completely cheaped out and it feels like a University dorm.

Edmonton went with Teeple Architects in Toronto for their library and you can tell they are trying to hide the cost-cut exterior as 90% of the images they have on their website about this project are all about the interior. http://www.teeplearch.com/portfolio/...brary-renewal/

My main concern for any new arena in the area is how "Flood-proof" it would be after the 2013 situation. Has there been any comments on zoning or engineering to deal with another situation like that?
Hopefully this will be resolved more permanently by the creation of the springbank dry dam. I believe it is past the point where it can be NIMBYd to death (not for lack of trying though.)

I’ve seen some sort of work being done in the area which might be related to the dry dam. That debate always killed me. “Don’t affect my acres that my great grandparents got for peanuts”. Meanwhile they sell off a quarter whenever they feel like it for housing developments.

You are right Jay. I used some cut-outs and tracing paper. The new rows are further from centre ice.

What's the capacity now? If the concert is popular enough it seems that are easily 5k people there, and when that family sued the Stampede for their daughter getting hurt at the Simple Plan concert the report by police had an estimate of 5000 people.

The Scotia Bank Corral sounds just about right to me.

Centre, place, arena ect... just wouldn't have the same ring to it.

Our arena may not look the best from an aerial shot, but it’s going to look pretty good from the street, which is what you want when you want to develop around it.
Aerial view probably doesn't matter as Sportsnet will still be using the B roll footage of the Saddledome, concreate plus 15, and corral when the Flames move in.

Westjet should spend their money finding my luggage.

Did the Calgary election change anything for the arena?

No.

At the development permit meeting last week, Terry Wong started asking questions that went beyond the scope of the development permit and the mayor came on the call to clarify that those decisions were already finalized by the old council and they weren't there to re-debate the merits of the arena deal.

The name will be generic.

It will be [Sponsor Name] Place, Arena or Centre.

I think "Sponsor Name Place, Arena or Centre" is perfect. Covers everything.
