I tend to be a big Markstrom critic, but I'm skeptical that starting Vladar in game 4 would be a good idea.
Teams that resort to backups almost always end up losing the series.

Look. Way long ago, prior to this season, in fact it’s been a few years now, we had a discussion. Tampa had put up 6. I said that I didn’t think the goalie played poorly. You basically said that the goalie just needed to make a save.
Fast forward. This year there was a 4 game losing stretch where each goalie played 2 and each goalie let in 10.
Now it’s just Markstrom who has let in a few bad ones, and you yourself are approaching it with the same viewpoint. Not all shots are made equal, you have to look at the goals
Honestly, your viewpoint has changed over the years and now aligns with mine.
Are you not proud of being able to come around? Seems adaptability is an admirable trait, at least in my world. Having an open mind, learning and improving are desirable
Just coming out swinging is not really a good look, imo

Markstrom is neither the problem nor has he been the solution yet. Flames forwards being unable to get sustained zone presence over the past 5 periods has put too much pressure on a d-core that looks painfully average without Tanev. I am really hoping that next game (outside of scoring goals) that the Flames get back to pucks in deep amd sustained zone presence. I felt that the oilers dmen were looking over their shoulder in game one. Since then they have not had to spend nearly enough time under pressure in their zone.

Swinging?
By calling out an arrogant person? That's not swinging.
But you don't live in my head. So don't summarize what I'm thinking. I'm still on the other side of this discussion thanks, the guy needs to make more saves if they're going to win.
I wouldn't blame him for last night, but he didn't make the big saves and steal the game either. In this game I think the defense was worse than the goaltender.
The Flames have a 12-10 edge in expected goals in this series, and that means they're not finishing as well, and Smith has been better.

Luckily there's not a single coach in the N, A, or even ECHL that would be stupid enough to start Vladar over Markstrom in the most important game for this franchise in 18 years. Least of all an all-time great coach like Sutter

You also have to look at next season. He’s your guy still. See what he can do right now. It’s a new day, he’s a vezina finalist for a reason, and goalies are weird. He should start.
If he was ####ting the bed out there every night then you’d have to start Vladar. But he isn’t. He’s making a few 10 bell saves a game and we’re still losing. Game one was on Markstrom of course, but the others weren’t.

New Jersey was good to give up their 1st for a goalie right?

Hasn’t Markstrom either had a major slump or an injury every season? He was due.

One one hand he's a Vezina finalist. On the other hand he flat out can't play against the Flames biggest rival. The statistics are irrefutable and it's a bit of a conundrum for sure. Maybe next season the team is going to have to come to grips with the fact that the backup should be playing against the Oilers and cross their fingers they don't meet in the playoffs again.

so frustrating watching markstrom make some good saves, then give up some stinkers and it seems the flames are unable to recover from the stinkers for what seem to be a variety of reasons

We had the same issue with Lemelin.

Even more happy thought: our $6 million goalie has been the worst goalie in BOTH series the Flames have played

Goaltenders are a different breed. So strange how he's up to the task against 30 teams but against one particular team he's mentally defeated. This has been going on since he was a Canuck.

Lemelin is an interesting comparison.
And of course all that changed when a young under-sized goalie came up and grabbed the reigns.
Hmmm.

If history could repeat that wouldn't be a bad thing here.
