Jim Nill stated today that despite Grushnikov being pulled out of the lineup before the Texas game yesterday he still chose to stick around to address and thank his teammates and the coaching staff after the game. He really hammered down on the high end character of this kid and his desire to become an NHL player. He also referenced looking back at Tanev 10+ years ago and making that comparison to the player Grushnikov could become. Nill stated he really didn't want to trade the kid.

They already have an extra first around that level, remember. Probably will get another.

The other thing is, we got a player who has been developing in Dallas system which has developed a lot of players. So we got something we know opposed to drafting someone developing them and potentially having them bust.

Figured I'd share this here. Nice snapshot of the Conroy era so far. And we'll be able to add Hanifin and his return to this list shortly.

Greer and Pachal have been nice little additions as well. I'd rather have them than Ruzicka and DeSimone.

Having slept on this trade, it sits right there with the Sharangovich trade. Sneaky good. On the face majority reaction is meh, but the real heart of it is rock solid

I am fine with the return. Very whelmed. It was wishful thinking to expect a 1st rounder and/or a top prospect (LOL) coming back. If you are disappointed in not getting that, then that's on you for your expectations being so out of line for a 34 year old defensive D-man who is injury prone. GMs, scouts, other fans, other players, they all see the same things we do when it comes to Tanev. They all see him as a high risk for injury, but a solid defender when healthy. Scouts see him slouched on the bench after blocking a shot, or him hobbling to the locker room after a hit. Flames were playing with fire by holding onto Tanev as long as they did, and if he would have gotten injured on some stupid play, then we would get nothing in return. So let's not pretend the Flames got hosed.
I will forever remember Burke's stupid stance on not trading away Cammalleri for a low draft pick because he thought the Flames would get lowballed and laughed at. Conroy got something, and that's what matters. Never heard of the prospect coming our way, but willing to give him a chance.
Also, I don't think Tanev is signing against next summer. At his age he deserves to play on good teams and go on cup runs. He's not getting that here. For his own sake, I hope he stays away.
Onto the next UFA.

All 4 should be added to the in/out lists and it makes the lists look even better IMO

I guess Conroy chose Grushnikov and 2nd over 2024 1st. May be the scouts think Grushnikov is better than this year's late 1st rounders. if it's true, I see Hanifin traded for 2025 1st.

Who’s to know for sure? I’m like Conroy, seems to be every scout loves the prospect, the player himself knows what he is and what he could become, could help now. I can understand why they went this route, hopefully it works out!
|
While every scout loves him, it seems they project that as having a ceiling of a 6/7 dman, and he was ranked #10 of Dallas prospects.
I don't think it will really be figured out for 5 years.
I expect that Dallas never offered a first, that Conroy does like this guy (why he was willing to pull the trigger and not wait until the deadline), and this guy will end up as a back end NHL dman at some stage.
Which would make it a very good trade.

They probably get three pieces as well for Hanifin and Markstrom when they are moved. Basically in keeping with what I was hoping. Definitely a good job by Conroy.

The Marek interview was interesting...
Conroy said that Nill wouldn't put Grushnikov on the trade table for a while, and didn't want to move him. Then he said if he includes Grush, does it move the deal forward? That was the trigger point of the deal, and resulted in Dallas winning the bidding war. Obviously Conroy and his team value the kid very highly.
