Not a fan of this trade, but I do like this quote from Lucic today.
Edmonton = no good.
Quote:
"In order for me to move on from Edmonton it was important to go to a contending team, a team that was playing meaningful hockey on a night-to-night basis,'' he emphasizes. "Throughout my career that's brought out the best in me and in my game.
"This is a bit more of an older team, with an older captain, which I had in Boston with Zdeno (Chara). Gio is coming off his best year, winning the Norris Trophy - and deservedly so. That's a great starting point for any team.
"Missing the playoffs three of the last four years … I don't want to do that anymore. As I said, I want to be playing meaningful hockey on a night-to-night basis and with the excitement and energy I can bring I think this will revitalize me and help this team take the next step."

I was okay with everything up to today. He had a Brodie deal in place that I think would have turned out pretty good for the Flames but the player nixing it was out of control. I'll be honest now that my confidence in the GM is shaken and I'm kind of worried about his next trade. Kind of hoping maybe he doesn't trade Brodie now given how bad this trade turned out. I feel he's panicking a bit.

Not necessarily. Players choose not to waive their NMC because they really like where they are with the team. The only reason I can see him waiving is if he absolutely hated it here, which would probably mean he's having an awful time playing here. It's a bit of a lose-lose.

This is a breakdown of the trade. For what its worth, PuckPedia gives Milan Lucic a 9.65 player rating and James Neal a 3.90 player rating. PuckPedia Player Rating is a predictive measure which estimates a player's impact on the game by measuring contributions including: Even Strength Offense & Defense, Power-Play Offense, Penalty Differential and Faceoff success.
So, they say we got the better player.
We also saved $500K and got a conditional 3rd round pick.
The numbers SuperMatt 18 postedand the post of Oilers writer Blake McCurdy really makes me think that the Flames may have done better than people think.

Can't really blame him that much. Canucks fans were terrified for some time they were going to be on the wrong side of a Lucic deal. The fact that it was another team in the division is kind of icing on the cake. The only fanbase happier then the Oilers today may be the Canucks.

Don't like the NMC news at all. If true, they just have to rely on Lucic playing ball (like he just did, so there's that).
Aside from that, I'm not concerned that Neal suddenly scores 20 on the top line. That top line can only score so many goals and if he's doing it, Chiasson isn't. Plus I don't think he's be long for the top line, just like Lucic. The difference is that Lucic can play bottom six. I don't think Neal can handle bottom six minutes or linemates.
Some posters are saying Lucic has the worst contract in the league. With the NMC that's debatable, but without it, Neal's is now worse, if you consider the retained salary to be part of his cap.

He's saying all the right things of course... whether or not he can bring that to the ice every game is the big unknown.
Still not a fan of the trade, however we all have to hope that turns out well at this point

I wonder if the reports on waiving the NMC were based on what the insiders said the real deal was, which means that, "officially" the team will always say they will honor it but there's a handshake deal that he will agree if things go south.

I mean.... this ... stinks.... but it stunk since Neal got here, really.
I was an apologist for Neal all year, part of the "he'll come around" crowd. He didn't.
And what really annoyed me was how disconnected he seemed - it's one thing to not be right on top of every shot, not "feeling it". But his play without the puck was so bad, so lazy, so ineffectual, that honestly, hell, yeah, let's bring Lucic in, he literally can't be worse.
But we now have eleventeen left wingers and the right side is horribly thin - it was thin before Neal left. So there's gotta be something else in the works here.
