Iggy was one of the best power forwards, but the very best?
How about Geordie Howe? Phil Esposito, Mark Messier, Cam Neely?

Arguments could be made for Shanahan, Thornton, Gillies, Lindros.

Iggy was the best power forward of his era at least

We don’t have the top end talent like that team but our defense is miles better than Commodore, Montador, and Brennan Evans.
If those loaded rosters were so much better than ours, why did they also only barely qualify for the playoffs?
|
Warrener recently called that '04 run a fluke and the only reason it happened was because they stumbled upon Kiprusoff. Hard to argue differently. I'm not sure you can look at that roster as some kind of a blueprint how to build a winner other than get the best goalie in the league and play Sutter hockey lol.

The whole point is that there are no Luke Schenn magic bean trades that will make this team a contender. I honestly think there isn't a player alive that helps the team that much, honestly. If you just add McDavid to this team, they probably make the playoffs and still get bounced first round.
Spending assets on this team would be foolish, but Treliving will, they won't make it past the first round IF they make the playoffs, they'd have given up picks which they need because their prospect pool is weak, yet people will still claim he's an amazing GM even though his teams have no real playoff successes but he calls other GM'S about available players. That's like saying I'm a great lawyer because I represented myself in court.

Yeah you can argue he's been aggressive to a fault at times. The issue with this organization is that when it's evident they should fold their hand, they keep doubling down.

That’s a good way to find success though. Look at the Bruins.

Taking a while to get to 5000

The Bruins foundation is a bit more, solid, shall we say.

The Bruins still have key pieces of from their last cup win. Similar to the Penguins in that they are trying to squeeze one more run out of some proven cup winners. The Flames have had zero playoff success with this group of players. There is no evidence they will be able to win two rounds let alone a Stanley Cup.

Warrener is a giant sourpuss and it is no surprise that he views his best career accomplishments through a negative lens.

I wager Gavrikov is a Bruin when that trade happens.

The Bruins are, however, one example of no top draft picks (homegrown anyway) but still successful. They needed to have several guys playing way above their draft position to do it, and they also needed their stars to sign extremely cheap contracts.

They drafted a generationally good centre in the 2nd round before the modern era began.
He’s 37 now.
Marchand as well was a big hit in 2006.

I’m gonna go with the Lightning. Feel like they’re hurting on D without McDonagh, at least Gavrikov can provide that stability on D McDonagh gave.

I think we're keeping Kadri and Huberdeau for at least a few more seasons, but otherwise I'm down to tear down to the studs. Personally I would keep Zadorov on the D as well. Lindholm i'm really on the fence about- great player with a strong contract. Really depends on how you feel about chances of resigning.
Getting max value out of Hanifin, Mangiapane, Toffoli, Backlund, and Coleman is extremely desireable, but frankly I don't think our organization has the guts to cut this deep. But I think there's at least 1 more 2023 first in these players, perhaps 2. And some good prospects to boot.
