There is no rhyme or reason as hockey fans in general just love trades more than fans of any other sport. The fact we have an ongoing thread of speculation and rumours when trades barely happen anymore is telling of how hockey fans covet shiny new players.

I don't think this is nearly enough.
Monahan is on pace to score 30 points this year and making 6.4 million. You probably have to pay a first just to move him. As an example. Patrick Marleau was making 6.25 million and Toronto paid a first to the Canes to dump him for the last year of his contract. He scored 37 points for the Leafs that year.

Pretty much every player drafted is in high school.
Its why the whole thing is such a crap shoot.

Marleau was 38 years old, the Canes were going to straight buy him out and so they were just selling a cap hit - they didn’t even want the player. Toronto couldn’t even afford a buyout.
Monahan is 10 years younger, probably some GMs see upside to him, either with salary retained (maybe even double retained like Foligno) or as a potential deadline asset next year. And look at Rasmus Ristolainen. Got traded for a first last year with horrific numbers.

True, but most have played more visible hockey - you can’t even look up Janko’s draft year stats on hockey db. The more troubling part was trading down to get a guy that was possibly available in the next round according to rankings.

Point is Marleau was still producing similar numbers and still had negative value. I can see a GM thinking Monahan is worth a gamble if he was an UFA but at 6.4 million he has negative value. The Flames either have to pay to move him or take a similar contract back IMO.

Yes, they're all high school aged but he played in a high school league. How many guys were drafted out of the same league as him??? It was a crazy long shot that he could have made in the second round.
Who will be the last minute scratch tonight???? Almost 100% someone from the third line: Monahan, Dube, or Lucic. Long shot bet: Hanifin.

They aren’t going to be good for a few years either. And they aren’t JG’s home team or anything. For all I know he hates them like a guy from here would hate the Oilers (though Philly fans typically hate some other teams more IIRC).

I don't think he'll be traded, just he's a candidate for a healthy scratch given his last few games
So if he is scratched tonight, let's not panic
