I know it was a long film but that third act really needed another 15 minutes or so to get it right. Still pretty good though, beautifully shot.

Rewatched The Abyss last night because Mrs Puppet had never seen it. I like it a bit more each time I watch it.

Gangs of New York is not as epic as I remember it. DDL's performance was outstanding, but it kinda felt awkwardly shot and strangely campy in certain spots. Leo doesn't have that veteran skill he develops over time, and Cameron Diaz is just flat.
That final scene leading into the credits is still amazing, however.

I love Gangs of New York because it is a colourful snapshot into 19th century life. A pet peeve of mine is that historical fiction movies are all grey scale and brown. People in the 19th century dressed in gaurish colour, anything from that period should be blindingly colourful. it's us,in 2024 who are obsessed with shades of gray.

I'm starting to see some people posting their reviews of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu and I am SO excited to see it. Patiently waiting for the Cineplex close to me to open up advanced ticket sales.
Currently sitting at 94% on RT.

You know what an underrated gem.... A Knight's Tale. I hated it when I first watched it as a child, all the oddball music and modern themes just didn't fit. Hearing We Will Rock You, and watching medieval characters dance to Golden Years felt like such a strange choice. Yet after all these years it's grown on me. I find it a charming movie, and it really stand out among the untraditional sports movies. Heath Ledger is great, yet Paul Bettany as Geoffrey Chaucer delivers the stand-out performance of the movie. It's a captivating movie, even if deep down it's a formulaic sports movie.

Watched the big sequels on the weekend.
Gladiator 2: I really like the Gladiator formula with fun action scenes and Roman political intrigue made epic with solid music and cinematography. This does add a bit to the original story but mostly suffers from being a sequel. Feels a lot like an epilogue to a more interesting story that hits the same plot beats, while also unnecessarily trying to one up the gladiatorial battles. Nothing special but still enjoyable and am hoping for a revival of swords and sandals epics. 7/10
Moana 2: The original is one of my favourite Disney animated films, giving us a strong protagonist going on a simple yet emotional hero’s journey. Also love the water animations with lots of bright colours enhancing the tropical environments. The sequel is exactly the same. Really enjoyed more of the animation but the story is a complete rehash with an identical journey and character arc. There are a few new characters but they add very little to the story. The songs are nothing special and do their best when referencing the original. Definitely feels like a TV show being split up into multiple increasingly lazy cash grab sequels. 5/10

The best Christmas present one could ask for. Eggers films are always an experience.
There are some bold statements being made. That reviews are coming out three weeks early shows they must be confident.

^ Agreed on Moana 2. It was pretty bland and lacked the spark of the original, plus a new character who was central to the plot progressing pretty much went nowhere. I also thought the first one was fantastic, one of my top 5 disney animated movies of all time.
I was pretty disappointed to see such a lackluster follow up effort.

Gangs of New York is a personal favorite, though I admit it's not a superb film.
I think its beautifully shot and the use of color is wonderful.
Mostly it's about DDL though. His performance, as it does in There Will Be Blood, is so good it makes the movie feel better than it really is.

Timely post as I just read this article about it the other day:
https://www.theguardian.com/film/202...=share_btn_url
Watched it with the kids a couple of years ago and they loved it too. Super underrated for sure.

It should also get some praise on its themes and message.
I remember it being a tighter film than it was. Some of the editing and storytelling felt disjointed.
Still worth the re-watch.

Gangs of New York was stupid. I thought it was satire. Overacted and terrible.

I find that the people that badmouth Gangs of New York are the same that hated Thin Red Line, but keeps the Transformers series alive.
In the future, this is how we end up living in the cloud city of Stratos while the Trodlites toil below.
That touch of camp in GONY was the same when he moved to the modern setting of Departed. I dig style.
Agree that Diaz was miscast though. She was passable, but couldn't keep up.

While I have no real opinion on Gangs of New York (I remember liking but wouldn’t rewatch it) I truly applaud the Star Trek reference. I think it might be Troglytes though.

Troglodytes: Literally refers to a prehistoric cave dweller.

Strange Brew is correct. It was the Troglytes in the Star Trek episode.

That felt like a mashup of Tribble and Corbomite.
