Who is saying there should be attacks on Russian soil? No one has said this. At least not publicly.

Very interesting article on Russian finally creating a digital database to track those who are eligible for military service, aka mobilization.

Quote:
Before this project, Russia's military enlistment records were in a chaotic state. A source says:

"Even in Moscow, almost all information in the military registration and enlistment offices was still on paper cards, which had not been updated for decades.
Quote:
In addition, it's intended to help track down so-called 'evaders' – those who are trying to avoid military service. The database includes mobile phone numbers and photographs.

This will enable 'evaders' to be tracked down by geolocating their mobile phone signals, as well as enabling the authorities to use CCTV cameras with facial recognition systems to track down those trying to evade mobilisation.
Quote:
The system is now being adjusted and, if necessary, all information will be available immediately to border guards, says a source at the security service of a Moscow airport."

Explains why it was so "easy", relatively speaking, for those hundreds of thousands of people to leave without so much as a peep from border control. They seemingly had no issue letting men of fighting age leave, without question most of the time.

Next mobilization, if it happens again, is going to be rough for russians.

Very interesting, although I wonder what (if any) are the implications for Russians already outside the country, like Pointman?

I can tell you anecdotally having been to Thailand and Bali recently, both places are full of Russians at the moment, living their best lives. Loads of fighting age men (often with their families). I'm sure some hate the war, and others support it (I haven't been speaking to them)... but they all seem unified in their desire to sit it out in a tropical paradise and wait for it all to blow over.

So are there going to be any repercussions for those who got out of Dodge as the bureaucracy slowly catches up?

Has anyone heard from Pointman?

I'm starting to fear the worst.

Was just thinking the same. Last post is still from Oct. 4th. He was out of the country at the time though. Hopefully just dealing with more important things.

Bit of a sidenote, but I thought this might have an audience here.

Just a quick, fairly light history+update on just how much the current Russian state is starting to look like Soviet Union, and what that looks like for musicians trying to have a public opinion on things.

Also a reminder that there is still criticism and dissenting voices inside Russia, even if they can be hard to hear sometimes.

I'm sure the secret service was not happy about it. Not only is there no US military presence, but you also have random missile strikes still occurring. Now they apparently let the Russians know that Biden would be there but that still seems super risky. Quite impressive they pulled this off!

US gave Russia heads up several hours before Biden left.

I am sure Russia wants no part in injuring a US President because they wanted to rain missiles down on civilians like usual. They probably had strong command to troops to stand down. War would be over in a week if they did something dumb.

That said, good on Biden for going. This must raise spirits tremendously.

I’m sure many Republicans were hoping a missile strike would take out both presidents.

Russia probably wants no part of it, but all it would take is one random person with grenade or sniper rifle or something to change the course of history. One world war was started that way.

In Macron's Q&A following his talk at the security conference he also addresses people calling for regime change in Russia. He pretty much directly calls out the US for failed efforts in regime change in the last couple of decades, so perhaps his comments are directed at the US generally wrt to regime change, but who knows for sure. Either way, his comments suggest there may well be conversations going on about that kind of stuff.

France has always had factions of their government that lean toward Russia. Like Germany, they can be a flakes ally when it comes to Russia and Russia’s allies. They seem to respect the power of Russia, even if they don’t like the tactics. They try to play both sides and they need to stop.
