Had one guy staring at his phone crossing 4th Ave at 7th street, completely oblivious, 4 lanes going west. I gave a quick (not an F You) style honk as he is right in front of me. As a way to say "you are gonna get killed buds". Give me the finger. Guy in a suit.
I think people drive and walk 40% slower when looking at their phone.

There's a very good argument that once the pedestrian is on the other side of the road from the direction you are traveling, it's safe to proceed.

Yeah, I'm actually gonna put this to bed right now because it's already been legally tested: R v Schumacher, 2014 ABQB 571
If there is no interference with the pedestrian's right of way (ie: impediment of their forward progression through the crosswalk), then there should be a finding that the car did yield. So the cop in the Globe and Mail article is wrong.
https://www.canlii.org/en/ab/abqb/do...ocompletePos=1
You do not have to wait until the pedestrian fully crosses, you only have to wait until the pedestrian has passed your lane.
Another officer as quoted in a Calgary Herald article gets it right:
Quote:
“If a person has one foot off of the curb, they’re in the crosswalk,” says Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey of the Calgary police traffic section. Drivers can continue once a pedestrian has passed their lane (the obligation isn’t “curb to curb,” Stacey says) but passing a motorist already stopped at a crosswalk is dangerous — not to mention expensive: a $575 fine and four demerits.

You can literally see the Ontario migration to this city on our roads lol. Stop signs as suggestions, tower buzzing pedestrians, riding your ass because you have the nerve to not blast through a playground zone. It's hilarious.

Regardless of the law, it’s a good idea to wait at a crosswalk until the pedestrian has fully crossed, as a visual signal to oncoming traffic that there’s a pedestrian on the road.

This makes no sense. The signage, the 5+ foot squidgy thing crossing the roadway (and flashing lights should there be good signage) should be a sufficient visual signal for any driver who isn't completely negligent.

Dude over here living in fantasy land.
I see some dickhead assuming the the cars stopped at a crosswalk for a person they can't see are just morons, and proceeding through the blind lane several times a month.

Most crosswalks don’t have flashing lights. And if oncoming traffic is moving, inattentive drivers are going to assume that the crosswalk ahead is clear.

What situation do you foresee where a driver seeing oncoming traffic starting to move but doesn’t see that they were previously just stopped and doesn’t see the pedestrian directly in front of them?

So I say any driver who isn't totally negligent should be able to see and react appropriately to a pedestrian, and your suggestion is that I'm living in a fantasy land because... and then you describe a driver who is negligent.
Cliff: It's not my job to police other drivers or hold the hand of the ones too stupid to use their awareness on the road. And as a pedestrian, I'm also making sure I'm being defensive when I cross the road and looking for cars that haven't stopped or noticed me.

It was just a light hearted jab.

Understood, my bad, didn't mean for that to come off quite so angryface as it did. Cliff's dumb comment got me into "oh what fresh hell is this" response mode and I didn't make it clear that the comments weren't tied together.

Its alright, you and nik can fight during the 'Feats of Strength.'
That always resolves everything.

We should start planning the Feats of Strength bracket pretty soon.
I’ll take on Paulie in the opening round.

Used to be that banks had their ATMs accessible 24 hrs a day, sometimes if I needed cash I would run errands late at night when there is no traffic. Not anymore, doors locked, f u. Can't blame them but it's just another example of customer service and convenience getting worse.

My bank is right downtown, Main Street. Access to the ATM is closed all weekend. Middle of the day on a Saturday, locked. But the other main bank chain next door has atm access. So I can use that one and pay fees there… ####ing dumb.

For a time didn't they go with scanning your bank card to open the door? Is that not a thing anymore?
