Did he promise you personally he would never throw another ball in the NFL or something?

No, but why bother retiring at all if not for the spectacle?

because...and i will reiterate it one more time...when he was asked in FEBRUARY to make a decision, at that time he felt like he could not commit to another season. Then the packers asked him to do a presser which out of loyalty to the orginization..he agreed to.
Then 5 full months later...he felt like he did want to play....and he could play...and i would suggest the Packers knew he could to but they wanted to move forward (Ted thompson and him alone IMO) because they offered him 25 million dollars NOT to play. So, and as is his right, he told them if you dont want me...release me or trade me.
Then this past season...he never formally retired yet again. He was interviewed in february (his last interview by the way...damn media whore ) if he had played his last game. he said and I quote "at this time, i feel like yes, i have played my last game". 2 things about that...1) "at this time"...again a full 7 months before the season was to begin and 2) he was injured and had never not been able to throw a football because of arm strength. this was a first for him. on top of that he never ever asked the Jets to either release him nor trade him. he left the door open to return all along. But when they drafted Sanchez they then gave him his outright release. 2 weeks ago. Brad childress takes notice of this.
Now fast forward to today. He is riding around his property hunting whatever he hunts and fishin whatever he fishes...he has been away from the game for 3 months and probably thinking about the game the whole time, and he gets a phone call from a guy that he is close to in childress. Childress wants to talk to him about several things concerning Favre not the least of which is to see how much interest favre has in returning to the game and his commitment to do so from the beginning of training camp and mini-camps thru the summer.
Thats where we are. Favre has done absolutely nothing wrong/immoral/deceitful at this point...nothing. Would it be a slap to the face of Packer fans...hell yeah it would as I can attest to. But that doesnt mean he isnt entitled. he wasnt exactly shown a whole lot of loyalty by the current regime in GB...so he owes them nothing in return.
Athletes say they are quitting all the time and come back. What makes this and the accompaning hate so much different?

I don't like it anytime it happens, but at least most of the other guys that have done it haven't spent five years publically contemplating it and then retiring and unretiring twice.

It's not like it was some tiny one-on-one interview. He held a press conference to announce he was retiring. The excuses are irrelevant. If he wasn't sure, he could've said "I'm not sure." It's not like he hasn't done that before.

Favre insisted that even if he felt better next season, he's still done with playing.
"It's nothing I would second-guess, no," he said.

His word? Did he promise to retire and not to come back?
All of the circus isn't Favre's fault. The media is just going crazy with this. NFL network has gone as far as to post a team at the Hattiesburg airport and are calling their reports Favre Watch 09.
None of that is Favre's doing. I don't even think the rumors are.

Agreed...if he wasn't sure at that time. Sounds like he was sure then though...doesnt it?
Just because he has possibly changed his mind means nothing...everyone is entitled to do that.
What difference does it make to all you who seem so horribly upset by it anyway?
i understand the media stuff can get irritating...but how the hell is that his fault? Again...the last interview the guy gave to anyone was in mid february...so how is he putting himself in the spotlight?
The Vikings are the ones who have started this round of Favremania...not the man himself.

I will sound off on this after I see how this meeting goes today. I'm still not on board with this move, at all.
Just an article to dispute some things that have been mentioned in thsi thread. There were some articles saying Favre wanted to be released by the Jets, and if that's indeed true, I have a feeling he wants to play with the Vikings just to stick it to TT and the Packers.

FWIW....

The now graybearded No. 4 shot down a report that Bus Cook, his longtime agent, had asked for Favre's release rather than to be placed on Reserve/Retired
"No," he said. "It doesn't matter one way or the other. It all comes down to physically how I feel. ... That could change based on arthroscopic surgery, but I'm not willing to do that and I'm not willing to take that chance. No, we didn't ask for a release, no."

I can't wait for next off-season when Favre unretires again after throwing the Viking out of the play-offs by week 13.
It would be one thing if he continually had these press conferences and came back and was effective, but to see him come back and suck makes it even worse.

Yeah Favre has a history of flat out lying...got it.
Funny how he wasn't released until AFTER the Jets traded up to get Sanchez though...is it not? Its not like the Jets could of traded him to Minnesota...that would of cost them 3 1st rd picks to the Packers as per their deal.
And reading this I almost hopes he leads the damn Vikings to the SB....but i cant because of my loyalties.

That i agree with...but those are Favres own words....not Cooks.
Cook is a snake though...no question.

Truthfully, anything that goes through any media from Brett's mouth I'll take as Cook's words anyways. The media is used for posturing in situations like this.
As for my own opinion, I think Favre has always wanted to play for Minnesota. That's why that silly clause was included in his trade to the Jets. I think he is very bitter towards the Packers and more specifically Ted Thompson, and this is his way of sticking it to them.
So while the Vikings are interested in Favre, I have a hard time believing that Favre is not just as interested in the Vikings.

That I agree with. Vikings are in trouble if Rosenfels is their starter. With Houston being in Indy's division, I got to see Rosenfels a lot last year and he sucks.
OT: Favre is currently the leader for all time TD passes:

and all time passing yards:

Can't wait till Peyton breaks those records!

I agree with the notion that he would('ve?) improved the Vikes' QB position, but I'm glad he's retired. I'm sooo beyond sick of this guy and his "I'm retired...wait I'm not" routine. What is this, going on 5 years now? I realize the media and their man crush(and in some cases, their love of ragging on him) of him has really magnified the situation. But if the guy wasn't so damn indicisive it wouldn't have even been an issue in the first place. I think he's a weird guy. If this latest report is true, I say good riddance.
