He’s at 60% on faceoffs. Rooney and Kirkland are sitting at 44%. The entire team is brutal but for a 4th line starting with the puck is important.

Losing young centres is what's painful, maybe his ceiling was 4th line if so rather have youth than Rooney. They tried to slip him through waivers and we lost a 23 yr old centre to keep a 31 yr old centre for the same 4th line roll. Still mind boggling.

I think I was the one who recently brought up as a player that would be nice to have around, mainly based on his age and the fact that he is really good at faceoffs.

The Flame suck in faceoffs. There have been so many times this season that the Flames have had to defend rather than attack because they lose faceoffs more than they win them. The Flames are 30th in FOW% (45.7%). Our best faceoff guy is Sharangovich at 50%. The guys who have taken the bulk of the faceoffs this season range between 39.2% to 48.5%.

I'm not really lamenting the loss of Schwindt specifically, but just pointing out that what he is good at is also something this team needs. A young center, that can grow with the team as the rebuild continues, that can also win faceoffs at a decent rate. Maybe one of the guys we drafted this past draft can fill that hole sooner rather than later, and that would be great. Eventually, it will need to be filled though.

We only have 2 centers on the roster. WEll I guess 3 with Rooney and Kirkland rotating. And they suck at faceoffs as well.

We don't even have any good wingers who can take faceoffs like we did with Iggy.

Something they need to focus on and rectify as they build this team.

Agreed, it is something they need to address as they build the team. I think most people were content or at least accepted this season would be a rebuilding year, and so it might not be a pressing issue if trouble in faceoffs leads to a few more losses this season. But the goal is to to build a good team in the future, so it will need to be something they fix.

It will just mean more tilted ice against the Flames, which will also lower the offensive output of the team. It's such a waste to have a faceoff in the offensive zone, and then watch players like Kuzmenko and Huberdeau defend instead of attack because they lose the faceoff. Not that you would want Schwindt or a 4th line center with them all the time, but it would come in handy if you are down and really need faceoff win.

Yeah, that is an issue, when you have skill players, and they hardly touch the puck. Instead, they are spending energy trying to battle and get it back or dumping it in for line changes.

Also is a big key on special teams. PP doesn't have to chase and spend 30 seconds trying to gain the zone again, and the PK can whip it down and kill time quickly.

21/22 we had a 51.1 FO % good for 11th. 8th place was 51.3% so essentially a top 10 team in faceoffs. We finished 6th overall and 6th overall in goals for.

18/19 #2 team in the league, #2 in goals for and #3 in faceoffs.

Our 2 best seasons and goal scoring seasons. Faceoffs make a huge difference.

FOs are something that you can learn. Bring in Yeller as a special consultant or something. Or someone youger if Yelle’s dark arts are no longer relevant.

The GM coached faceoffs for Backs. I'm sure between Backs and Conny they got things covered

I think it was Seravalli that mentioned that teams in the west had inquired about Byram. Wonder if the Flames were in on that?

Was this prior to Byram going to the Sabers or currently while he's been with the Sabers?

So, it was Dreger saying this and not Seravalli.

Flames shouldn't be in on any D man. Priority should be a center. And if we are to believe the local pundits, it is.

Can't imagine what they could be offering. They certainly shouldn't be giving up premium picks or prospects, which Byram would presumably require.

Unless Andersson is involved.

This would have been my assumption.

Something like Andersson for Byram + Forward Prospect (Kulich / Ostlund / Rosen)

I’m trying to get more information, but there appears to be some smoke around the Flames and Sabres. The name I’ve heard linked was Cozens, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Byram added as I’m told the Sabres were looking at Andersson with Pospisil added to fill to spot of Cozens so perhaps Calgary said they wanted Byram to fill the void of Andersson? More to come.

Not sure I’m a fan personally, I think we’re giving up too much for a guy still trying to find his way, but wanted to share what I’m hearing.

Byram + Cozens for Andersson + Kadri.

Done.
GM'ing is easy.

cozens+Byram would be an unbelievable add to this young core. I love that notion.

What are we adding to Rasmus for that type of package though?

I'd love to take the flyer on Cozens in CGY. That's exactly the type of center they need to be looking for. Young with upside.
