I'm not going to throw stones in a glass house, the Flames bet large on aging vets over a natural rebuild themselves.

Coffey is on the lookout for anyone who can "make plays" with balls.

I sometimes fear what a Draisaitl haul could bring the Oilers. Luckily they are too stubborn or too scared of the optics to the fanbase, at least the tier one ones, to trade him. Even if they did, I'm sure they'd manage to screw it up somehow.
There's no doubt he's an extremely skilled offensive forward but I really wonder what he is thought of around the league by GMs and scouts. He's very one dimensional, doesn't use his size, doesn't seem to elevate his teammate's play, doesn't come across as a good teammate and strikes me as a bit of an #######. Quite a bit of an #######. He's a perfect Oiler! I bet his value isn't as high as I sometimes think anywhere else but in Edmonton.

same. Next summer, with an extension in place? Jesus. They'd get a ton and they could use that haul to actually build something around McDavid. Here's hoping it never happens ... re-signing the pair for ~30m seems like a fantastic idea and they should absolutely go for it.

The fun part of all of this is how handcuffed they will be at the deadline. They absolutely should be trading their first round pick to get more competitive, but they will struggle to outbid teams and fit any decent deadline players under the cap. I can't wait. Either a deal or non-deal will be a hilariously disastrous result for the Oilers.
Deadline Capspace as per Capfriendly
Golden Knights: $4.4 million
Canucks: $3.6 million
Jets: $4.8 million
Kings: $2.5 million
Stars: $2 million
Avs: $5.6 million
Preds: $37 million
Coyotes: $15 million
Blues: $5.2 million
Flames: $4.3 million
Kraken: $4.0 million
Wild: $4.5 million
Oilers: $238k
Literally every single they are chasing in the West has more cap space and maneuverability.
Somehow they even have less space than the Wild, and they have $15 million in dead cap from Parise and Suter.

Campbell will have to be on his best behaviour… the oilers will try to get his contract cancelled for jay-walking.

Similar to what others have mentioned about our own UFA's, while Drai is a high-end offensive forward I still don't think they'd get anything truly insane as a return if he's traded next year. I'm going off memory at the moment but I don't recall any absolutely franchise altering deals coming back for a player that could be acquired in free agency a few months later. An extension in place could obviously bump the return up a bit but by enough to make their team any better? Unlikely imo.
The pressure would be on the Oilers to take whatever is the best deal prior to the deadline or possibly lose him for nothing. For them to substantially overpay to keep both would be hilarious, but so would seeing them lose one after the other for nothing or pennies on the dollar if they refuse to be proactive in trading them.

Drai is McAvi's fire hydrant.
Oilers would love to trade him.

When Leon he decides to sign another deal (Edmonton or elsewhere) he won't get everything he wants. He'll have to make a decision. To me it looks like it will come down to three choices, and he will get to select 2.
1. Sign with a franchise that has competent player development, cap management, and depth setup to win.
2. Play with his bosom buddy and life long pal Connor.
3. Get paid $$$. Everywhere but Edmonton he will have to pick two out of the three because a team will most likely have to hollow out their cap, assets, or both to acquire him and Conner.
In Edmonton he can pick two, maybe only one, and that selection will not be on a signing with a competent team setup to win.
If either of them want to sign a discount deal to win where they are, then it's their own fault for ignoring the terrible cap and asset management that wasted the 1st half of their careers.

Would be funny if the flames keep some cap space available for summer 2025 so they can make a trade with some team to take on some contracts (ideally while gaining some picks) so that team has cap space to sign Draisaitl out from under the oilers.

Draisaitl will be using Matthews' contract, not MacKinnon's.
MacKinnon signed his in Sep 2022, and Matthews in Aug 2023
By the time Draisaitl is negotiating, it'll be for more than Matthews'. My guess is he'll be looking for between$13 and $14M, long term
