It’s getting to the point where Gaudreau can demand $11 million+ with the season he is having. He has honestly become one of the most complete players in the game and his skill set is at such an elite level. What a great example with his back check tonight and gorgeous feed to tkachuk with 5 seconds left in the period. Unreal.

Look what guys like Panarin are making to play in places like New York city. I would argue that Gaudreau is just as good of a player (even better IMO) so to get him to stay in Calgary will likely cost even more.

And tkachuk won’t be far behind. I think the numbers to get them both signed (and I hope they do) is $11 million and $10.5 million x 8 years. I know it’s a lot but I think that’s the cost to keep stars in this market. Treliving played hardball with Gaudreau on his last contract. There’s no chance that can happen this time.

Tkachuk is not a UFA at the end of this year. So, likely nothing will be known at that time.

Johnny likely effectively has a NTC at the trade deadline, assuming he has put teams with no interest in a rental on his list of 5 team. And there is zero chance that Calgary would punt this season away by trading him.

Don't get me wrong, he's getting paid for sure, but teams prepared to make 80 million dollar commitments aren't adjusting their bottom lines game by game. It just doesn't work that way.
I agree that the numbers don't change on a game by game basis.

But this year's version of Johnny is different than the last few years. People now understand that his numbers with Monny were deflated. So, his value today is greater than it was at the end of last season.

Same for Tkachuk.

Both of these guys are extremely professional and I think if they are treated right and paid their worth, they will want to see things through. Just my gut.

Matthew's recent comments about Calgary and the Flames were also very encouraging. He seemed very sincere about his love for the city and the team. Maybe he met a Calgary girl or something, but he seems a lot happier these days.
I think if you offer the Tkachuks' the money, they sign. Brady got an insane deal, he took it. If Matthew gets a deal he likes, he'll sign.

Sung toThe Devil Went Down to Georgia

The devil went down to Calgary, he was lookin' for a soul to steal
He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind
And he was willin' to make a deal

When he came across this young man playing' on the Flames and playin' it hot
And the devil jumped up on a hickory stump
And said, "boy, let me tell you what"

"I guess you didn't know it but I'm a hockey player too
And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you
Now you play a pretty good hockey, boy
But give the devil his due
I'll bet a stick of gold against your soul
'Cause I think I'm better than you"

The boy said, "my name's Johnny and it might be a sin
But I'll take your bet, you're gonna regret
'Cause I'm the best there's ever been"

Johnny, tape up your stick and play your game hard
'Cause Hell's broke loose in Calgary, and the devil deals the cards
And if you win, you get this shiny stick made of gold
But if you lose, the devil gets your soul

The devil took out his stick and he said, "I'll start this show"
And pucks flew from his golden stick as he made many a goal
And he pulled the stick across the strings
And it made a evil hiss
Then a band of demons joined in
And it sounded something like this

When the devil finished, Johnny said, "well, you're pretty good, ol' son
But sit down on that bench right there
And let me show you how it's done"
"Fire on the ice" run boys, run
The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun
Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough
Will the Oilers win a Cup? No, child, no

The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat
And he laid that golden hickey stick on the ground at Johnny's feet
Johnny sang, "Devil, just come on back if you ever wanna try again
I done told you once you son of a bitch, I'm the best that's ever been"

He played "Fire on the Ice" run boys, run
The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun
The chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough
Will the Oilers win a Cup? No, child, no

Going to be expensive. I still think they will sign both, BUT if they don't what does that say about the organization??

Listening to Friedman this morning, he says things are "really quiet" between Gaudreau's camp and the Flames.

Not necessarily a bad thing. Gaudreau may not want the distraction right now.

so who was that playing with Johnny when he got 99 points?

Johnny is elite and it shows more when he has 2 good players to work with on his line...the Lindholm, Mony, Johnny line was great too.

anyway, they need to find a way to keep him here and hopefully it's not too crazy.

Couple of interesting Segments driving into work this morning:

1) NHL Morning Skate with Elliott Friedman:
Says that the Gaudreau extension talks in Calgary are dead quiet.

Also says that the majority of American based players do not want to come play in Canada due to our "lovely" restrictions. This will be a major issue for any Canadian team looking to add at the deadline. Canadian teams may be segregated with trading with other Canadian teams only.

2) Andy Strickland with the Fan960 crew:
Stated that he still gets the sense that Tkachuk still wants to play in St. Louis. While he is a media guy for that market, he is very well connected and tapped in with the "locals" down in the St. Louis area.

Interesting couple of points just thought id share.

It's a real shame it's coming to this but players are going to do what they think is best for them and I can't fault either one for wanting to play in their own country close to family.

Friedman stating that Canadian teams have to trade with each other? I know the NHL overdoes trade protection but there are players on US based teams who do not have clauses that will force the Canadian teams to only deal with each other

I mean did Tre not see this coming when he signed Coleman? The fact the Flames are now in this situation is on him! If either Gaudreau or Tkachuk walk for nothing, Tre had better follow them out the door. He should be embarrassed after Brouwer and Neal you would have thought he learned his lesson. But no he goes out and spends a big portion of the Flames cap space on Coleman.

I dunno, I'm not sure Coleman is the problem- we need other good players, and as I see it we are short at least one top 9 player as it is (although recently things are going well), Coleman is playing fine too- yes we will likely regret the sticker price by the end of the deal, but I don't see it right now as the barrier at least in isolation

I would worry about signing our superstar players before spending $5 mill on a middle six player. Let’s see how you feel about Coleman when Gaudreau or/and Tkachuk walk.

If Gaudreau and/or Tkachuk walk, it won't be because we signed Coleman.

It will be because neither player wanted to stay in Calgary and preferred to go back to the USA.

Perhaps, but if cap space becomes the reason they can’t get them signed then I disagree

well everything in the end comes down to cap space in one way or another of course, I truly believe if they can't get a deal done with Tkachuk or Gaudreau, its not the presence of Blake Coleman that is what killed it
