He has made his partners better players as well. Last year it was Hanifin. This year Kylington. He is the Backlund of the back end in that regard.

He turned Gio’s season around last year also.

I will give Brodie some credit, as he has managed to vastly improve his defensive/shut down game. He's playing well in that role in Toronto. However, he's not as good as Tanev, more expensive, less gritty/easier to play against, and only about 7 months younger.

He has to be Treliving's best UFA signing. Anytime you can attain your best defenseman in free agency on a reasonable contract it's a win. Given his play this season I'm confident he's going to be useful for the duration of the deal.

I think both Tanev and Markstrom were surprise signings to a few people, I don't recall hearing anything or much at the time.
It does give you some insight on Treliving as he would have been looking for someone at least as good as Brodie. Don't have time but would be interesting to look back and see who else was available that would have been a good replacement for Brodie.
It shows that Treliving was looking for the best replacement players including the goalie and they were on his main rival and he still went for them. It could also make you look at the Lucic signing differently, it looks like a salary swap and trading Neal but Treliving also saw the difference in those 2 players then already.
I would say maybe under the radar but other GMs surely would have known about those 2 players, Tanev and Markstrom.

Agreed on Brodie adding to his abilities. His last season in Calgary was good with regards to his defensive acumen.
In addition to all that you have stated, Tanev is also 500k cheaper.

Guaranteed the pro scouts did their due diligence and spent a good number of hours looking through video and metrics and provided Tre with their viewpoint that there'd be a strong chance that Tanev would outperform Brodie.

The thing I think Tanev most brings to this blueline is a Warrener -like steadiness. The d-corps around him is visibly cooler under the collar. Whereas the Giordano-led blueline had a more manic quality. But I could be reading too much into it.

It's funny looking back at some of the earlier posts in threads like this one. I wasn't a big fan at all, but now of course I love it. If anything, it's a borderline steal of a deal. He's been great all over the ice and thankfully he's stayed healthy. Fantastic signing.

When I see an opposition rush and then see that it’s Tanev my BP goes down right away.

Do you remember when people were upset with this signing? I remember.

Tanev does a million little things right, and he's engaged on every shift. I love watching him. I don't care how many points he gets, it's cool and maybe a little telling he was in on all the goals the other night, but .. it's irrelevant. He's a defensive juggernaut, good stick (not quite Lidstrom for stick or for skating but jeez). He's great. Solid, smart, dependable.

It's not exactly the same, but I remember feeling that way about Hamrlik when he played for the Flames and played with more offensive minded D-men. Phaneuf especially seemed to be elevated and way more confident when paired with him.
