It's a non-story now because she's stepping down. It definitely would have been a story had she stayed on.
Speaking of social media stuff, I just saw an attack ad that Justin Trudeau drives a vintage Benz worth over $1MM. I had to verify that, and its true. Holy ****.
Hard to be the champion of middle-class with that kinda car.

It is something he inherited from his father, and he disclosed it many years ago.

I wish he had inherited his father's intellect as well.

This kind of nonsense is so lame and petty. Who cares what kind of car the dude drives?

You realize most politicians are quite wealthy? Thus if this is the criteria, almost none of them can claim to be champions of the middle class

Yes I realize that, I wasn't born yesterday thank you very much. But how many politicians own a car worth more than $1MM? It's a little out of the ordinary I would say compared to most wealthy politicians. It surprised me to be honest.
I don't give a hoot about a guys background. But a $1MM car registers on my radar.

Why? Seriously, what difference does it make? He didn't buy the thing himself. We already know the background he comes from, so why does it matter?

More details of his inheritance, income and work growing up.
Seems open. This article is also from 2013, so nothing revelatory or new. I didn't know all this background and found it interesting though.

Why? I think he's awful but this is a terrible way to judge a Potential leader of a country. canada elections are literally nothing more an popularity contests.

Anyway, in my (admittedly shallow) understanding, it sounds like, at best, the Harper government has traded good, evidence-based public policy for subsidies for certain research universities (that pales in comparison to recent cuts to their actual funding) and certain industries (notably the energy industry).
Not sure that looks any better for Harper (maybe even worse).

Clearly, from a policy standpoint, the position is worse.
From a purely scientific standpoint, I can't see how it isn't better.
Groundbreaking advancements in treating/eliminating disease and raising standards of care comes from 'evil' Big Pharma, who invest 100's of millions with the prospect of making billions.
I'd bet the 'evil' Monsanto has done more to potentially create science based solutions, through profit based research, that might go some way to solving global hunger via GMO's than the last 100 years of combined global government research.
TL;DR: Most breakthroughs in science now come about as a result of for profit research.

Maybe there's more to Ala Buzreba's remarks on twitter then meets the eye. According to her sister it sounds like Ala was provoked, not to excuse her comments but I can understand why she would say those awful things. From Zehra Tajouri's facebook page:
"Because I got like 30 messages about this -
My sister Ala recently stepped down as Nose Hill Candidate for the Liberal party of Canada after some old tweets of hers resurfaced. Despite hundreds of people messaging her and reminding her that things she said at 16 are not a reflection of who she is - she, being far more gracious than I, stepped down for a bigger cause.
Let me tell you all - the tweets being reported on the news are true. When Ala was 16/17, she tweeted some pretty nasty things that she has repeatedly apologized for. But this isn't about her apology, this is about how not a single news agency - from CBC to the Huffington Post to the Sun - not a single one, explained why Ala was saying those things. It's not like she woke up one day randomly tweeting at people to go #### themselves.
Ala was repeatedly bullied by a group of conservative bloggers at the time. These were grown ass men and women well over the age of 35 year old picking on a 16 year old kid - telling her that she is invalid, a terrorist, corrupt, worth nothing, a raghead slut who doesn’t deserve life and has no place in Canadian society - that she should “go back to where she came from.” These grown ass adults with kids of their own were picking on a highschool student and when that student replied to them in the same anger, they screenshot her response and victimized themselves as if they were innocent.
I respect my sister’s choice to step down and I’ll stand behind whatever she chooses to do in the future, but I’m not gonna sit here and twiddle my thumbs acting like these bloggers are innocent unsung heroes. If we're going to call out students for things they said in the past, can we at least call out every adult who was bullying her as well? Adults who have had to make no apologies and instead are being lauded for pushing a kid far enough to say that."

Social media really doesn't let anyone running for government leave things in the past. It's a new age.

If that's all true (and it probably is substantially so) then it's no surprise how a teenager in an emotional war of words would react.
I think we're approaching an interesting new age when it comes to public reputations. If there's a public record of everything everyone's done since they were 13 (and we're not far off that for people of her age) then the public is going to have to adapt its unrealistic standards for politicians and other public figures. Ultimately, politicians are human beings, and that means they're flawed and they'll have made lots of stupid mistakes in their lives.
I can imagine more Rob Ford or Donald Trump style figures achieving political popularity in the near future. Not because they're shining moral examples of realized human potential, but because they're human and they overtly reject the idea that they're supposed to be perfect or meet some unrealistic idea about how they're supposed to present themselves.
Maybe the result of this new "permanent public record" will actually be increased compassion for and tolerance of human flaws and mistakes. And maybe that will result in more honest politicians, rather than just well-vetted ones who speak in media lines and soundbites rather than genuinely answering questions and speaking their minds.
I mean, a 16 year old girl says nasty things in a heated internet argument?
Film at eleven...

^Its true she's not being held to the standard that a typical 21 year old would be held too, But she's running against adults as a MP.
If she was a 50 year old white guy who said similar negative things about muslims in his youth he would be toast.
She's been photographed holding a Hamas flag at a anti Israeli Rally at UofC, which she hasn't answered for.

In the future, the only politicians will be children of politicians. Look at Harper's kids. Totally shielded from social media. NO one knows anything about them. In 10 years, they are going to be the only ones with no dirt to dig up because they have been so sheltered.
