Pretty bad game for the US overall, but a clutch save would've been nice regardless of how the team played.
Gaudreau played well I thought, got to think he'll only be more impressive playing with linemates he develops chemistry with. If he doesn't make the team this season he seems like he'll be deadly when he's 23-24 and a bit stronger. Nobody questions the speed or vision, really exciting player, bodes well for us long-term.
Can't really read too much from this tournament, but focusing on him individually so far he looks really good, often plays dying on linemates sticks.

Gaudreau (and K.Hayes) is getting more icetime than some of the NHLers on the team.
And Lativa is 3 and 1 with wins over US and Finland.

Who's the backup to Tim Thomas? Must be pretty bad if they didn't pull Thomas if he played that badly.

29-year-old AHL goalie David Leggio. Washington signed him last summer to play for Hershey. He allowed 1 goal on 8 shots when he replaced Thomas against Russia.
USA also has Winnipeg 5th round pick in 2012 Connor Hellebuyck who was outstanding for 2 years for UMass-Lowell and has signed an ELC with Winnipeg. He hasn't dressed so far.

That US vs Latvia game was awesome, pretty much zero defense going on.

How has Monahan been doing playwise? I can only check stats, Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I get he's not getting much chance to shine in what seems a 4th line role??
But damn Johnny steady as she goes hehe, love that all his points are goals and primary assists, and a few robberies which should have amounted to a few more points but 1.00 ppg is solid I think for a first showing!

Monahan's been playing a solid game. His line has been good at cycling. He made a great pass to Ward in the last game but hasn't stood out.

Sounds suspiciously like an... assist.

Where all Johnny's goals seemingly go, under the bar and in.

Holy blast from the past.
Kevin Lalande is the starting goal tender for Belarus in today's Finland vs Belarus game.

I think Johnny is just getting his legs in this tourney. Belarus was easy prey to start out. Now he needs to figure out these bigger and more experienced opponents, and he's been good despite the results, but the points will start to come.
Remember WJCs? He was stone cold for the round robin, then kicked it into another gear and set the world on fire the rest of the way when the games started to matter. I'm expecting more of the same here, perhaps not to the same extent, but he'll step it up. Easily could have a handful more points, though. But still doing good things with his speed and agility like drawing penalties and coming back to break up plays.
Johnny be good.

IIHF rules are you have to live in a country for two years to change "citizenship." He has been playing for Minsk's KHL team for the last 3.

My favorite thing about Johnny on that goal is his head is up the whole time. That angle from the back is great you can see him watch the puck until its a few feet from his stick, then his head goes to the front of the net. Even when the puck hits his stick and bounces a foot or so away, doesn't even look down to corral it.
