Yep. Avs are my other favorite team. He'll be a little overpaid but I'd take him over any of the Flames other forwards (right now, not taking potential into account)

The player can never receive less than 85% of his previous salary, in this case, 6.5M, so salary arbitration wouldn't be some huge boon for the team if he ends up underperforming.

Avs don't match...
Suddenly in a couple weeks our top 9 center group looks like
O'Reilly
Backlund
Stajan
+ Kipper in between the pipes
We will NOT be looking at a 14th place finish,
More like 7th-10th
Avs get a 13-16th place pick. And most likely a player not panning out even close to the caliber of an O'Reilly.
This is why.
On a side note..
Dear lord we might actually have a half decent center group soon..
|
I am almost willing to bet money this was EXACTLY in line with what one Brian Burke was thinking.

You keep talking like you know what's going to happen in the future. Like if they don't match the Flames will be able to use the money on O'Reilly for a potentially 22 year old #1 centre this team has been needing forever.
This team isn't picking in the top 5, people need to get over that.

They have never, in their entire franchise history, picked top 5 (unless you include 1972's #2 pick Jacques Richard or 1973's #2 pick Tom Lysiak in Atlanta)

Too much emphasis on age. Adding a player that will be UFA in 3 seasons, it doesn't matter how old he is. It might not be "win now", but it's "win in the next 3 seasons".

Well it'd be a 5M cap hit and at least it's just two years. Stajan was a four year deal albeit at 3.5M. That said, expectations are going to be through the roof for this guy - will be a ton of pressure.

I think there was a Canucks offer coming.

They could afford to give up the 1st and 3rd because the picks would be so late but chances are the Avs would match that offer because of that. Also I'm not sure O'Reilly would be thrilled to go there knowing that when Kessler comes back he would be 3rd on the depth chart while in Calgary he's guaranteed top line minutes.

So much discussion you'd think the Flames signed Lando or Schanko.

I can't see how they'd have made the salary fit. They already need to cut salary just to get under the cap for next year, let alone adding another $5M. Unless they were going to trade Kesler or something. Just doesn't make any sense.

If the Avs don't match then there will be absolutely no solace in a loss anymore (high Draft pick) don't know how to feel about that

finally i've reached the bottom of this thread
i read every post and burned probably 20 thanks
lot of well reasoned arguments and helpful news reposts.
thanks CP
also he's ours now, there's no way they match. and the GM that wants to convince everyone they'll match is Don Maloney and he is very literally playing with house money.
