Oh man, I finally waded through the monstrosity of the other thread. The only reason people know that spoilers are being posted in that thread is because the book readers/show watchers that post there quote the offending posts and say OMFG SPOILER ALERT.
I can't believe that people want suspensions handed out on a hockey forum, in a thread in an entertainment sub-forum about a TV show. The internet is serious business apparently...
On a show that is very closely based on the book... where the first book came out in 1996 and the 3rd book in 2000!
I can't believe it has been 14 years since the 3rd book came out and we've only had 2 books since then.
For the people that have followed the books since the beginning, is your excitement for the next book still there?
I have to admit I have lost interest waiting for the next book. I'm hoping whenever the next book is release that it will peak my interest again in the series.

I got the first book in '96 as a gift from a friend, because she liked the look of the cover and knew that I liked sci-fi/fantasy and "thick books". Turned out to be a good choice on her part. I still consider the first 3 books some of my most favorite books.
But this is where I am at with the series right now...I was so excited for book 4...and felt it was a massive disappointment. Especially after how long I waited for it. I figured that was because it was mostly characters I wasn't interested in. Then book 5 dropped, and while I read it excitedly...it really felt like GRRM was stretching. Nothing happened in book 4/5 that couldn't have been done in a single "grrm normal" sized book.
The folks in the tv thread are bitching about the slow pace now? Wait till they hit Season 5-6.
I guess right now I would describe it as that I am interested in where the story goes/how it ends, but I'm not nearly as excited about it as I used to be.

Yeah, when book 4 was delayed because "it got too big" I figured a) It can't be much longer now - it is written and they are just dissecting it for easier publishing and b) book 5 shouldn't be that much longer either.
Boy was I wrong.
If I was confident that it was going to be wrapped up after 7 books like he has been saying for years, then I would still be excited. But with the way this book has dragged I fear he has told a whole bunch of meaningless stories and the whole thing will drag on to at least book 8. And that would seem to imply another decade of waiting.
He enjoys telling lots of stories. In articles about his writing he often mentions how many ideas he has. It almost seems that his masterpiece is taking so long that he is putting those other ideas into this one just because that is what he is interested in getting on paper. I think he wants to finish ASoIaF, but there are lots of other things he wants to do too, and it is all getting jumbled together.

I've been wondering about that for a while. It certainly seems like the story doesn't let characters go to waste and the wolves do seem to be becoming actual characters as the story progresses. Also, the whole way Arya got rid of her seemed like maybe there might be more to add to the story.
On the other hand, it is just a wolf and there is a ton going on all over the place.
I'd give it a 50/50, I really have no idea. It'd be cool to see, but not if it's just to do it, it'd have to make sense and be of importance.
The wolves in the show are only shadows of what they are in the books and certainly haven't been becoming actual characters.

He also came up with "Littlefinger is going to kill Lysa soon", although I guess given his history that's not an unreasonable supposition.
And yeah my spoiler to hockeyguy was a massive brain fart, mea culpa again, thanks for being cool about it. Glad it wasn't in the actual GOT thread or my head would be up next to Ned's.
Bobblehead: I've said it before but I think a lot of the problems with books 4 and 5 are solved if you read them together. Get the e-book version here - http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/88768..._With_Dragons_[epub]
(I figure it's above-board to download that if you already own the paperbacks of both books (which I do) but use at your own karmic risk if not, I guess.)
In any event though, if there's a viable criticism to how the story has evolved it's that it's not as much of an adventure anymore but rather more of a historical epic (you're more worried about how Jon will be able to feed the wildlings on the wall as opposed to how Robb will manage to beat the Lannisters or whatever other fun rollicking quest might be happening).

I actually have the hard covers - I couldn't wait for the paperbacks...
And I really didn't have problems with books 4 or 5, or at least not like many people seem to complain. My only real issue are/were: the whole length of time between books that supposedly had been written as one, and the sheer amount of filler.
Awesome, we're getting lots of back story and character development but that is adding hundreds of pages, screwing with the flow and delaying the actual story.
It is like creating the Directors Extended Cut - he may be in love with those scenes but they aren't really helping anything move along.

Something that I noticed in the show this week that I wasn't sure was a change from the books was Arya including Thoros of Myr and Beric Dondarrion in her 'list'.
Does anyone remember if that's the case or should I start skimming for Arya chapters?

It's a change from the books.

Her list, but I think one of those is from a preview chapter of the next book, so careful:

Yup, guessing the mountain is a huge leap I think. Unless you are going solely off the fact that you know he's been recast so might be relevant again.
I think looking at IMDB/casting news is giving almost as many spoilers as the book readers.

Not to mention, hasn't Cersei said a couple of times that if she can't use Jaime as a champion, she'll use the Mountain? Which makes sense that she'd know about him, he being one of the Lannister bannermen and all. Or is her threatening to use him book only stuff?
