I would be fascinated to learn why, when every other bit of computer equipment aboard a bus is networked up the wazoo, the sign on the front of the bus is
not connected and has to be programmed manually.

Yes, it would make it trivially easy to replace one message with another. Even if the total number of messages available is limited, there's always room for at least one topical message that can be changed as needed.
Other transit systems don't have this problem. Why is Vancouver incapable of doing what everyone else can do?
