Well, I tried Pho Xuan last night since I was in the neighborhood for a dodgeball game. I didn't think there was anything special about it, to be honest.

It wasn't spicy at all, and there just wasn't much to it. IMO it was very similar to but not better than Essence of Saigon Garden in the NW.

It was nicely priced, for sure, at $7.25 for an Extra Large, but the XL wasn't really any bigger than the soup at Basil.

It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong, but I don't see how someone could say it's better than some of the other places in the area.

We tried the the Satay soup at Bowness Vietnamese Restaurant (looks like the above picture), it was pretty good (the beef ball soup kinda sucked). Just make sure to ask for extra spicy because the default is pretty mild.

I tried Basil yesterday, and it was excellent. The Spring Rolls tasted quite fresh, and I enjoyed the Lime juice. The take out could have been larger (but is always smaller with Viet), and next time, I'll ask for a lot more spicy goodness.

+1 for Le's Pho near Ikea in Deerfoot Meadows.

Their beef sate is good but the curry one is even better!

Had lunch at Basil's today, and tried the Beef Sate, man was it good! And huge!

Also had the Spicy Garlic chicken wings, and yeah, those were awesome too!

San Jose has quite a large Vietnamese population, and as such is a great place for pho and other Vietnamese food. A Vietnamese colleague of mine introduced me to ben bo hue, a spicy beef noodle soup from the central Vietnam region. Amazing soup, great on cooler days especially.

Glad to see some love for Basil in this thread. But it makes me want to go there!
