Below is our updated running tally of the albums most frequently mentioned by individual music publications in their year-end Top Ten lists. Although most of the lists come from publications whose reviews are included on this site, we have also included a few extra lists from prominent music stores, websites, and publications not normally found on Metacritic. Note that if a source ranks more than the standard 10 albums, we will not include titles ranked 11th or worse. In case of a tie for first or second, each album will receive the full points for that position. Our points system works as follows:
3 points for each 1st place ranking
2 points for each 2nd place ranking
1 point for being ranked 3rd – 10th, or for being included on an unranked list
"Round and Round" is knowing and self-conscious, commenting on itself as a song as it unfolds. That bass/vibes line goes round and round, there are lyrics about air guitar and a frontman, and Ariel Pink whispers "breakdown" during a breakdown. This is music that gets over on its astonishing level of craftsmanship, which is something no casual Ariel Pink fan accustomed to his blown-out home recorded lo-fi output over the last decade would have expected from him in a million years. In 2010, Ariel Pink was the strange kid who ####ed around all semester and developed a reputation as a hopeless loser who then proceeded to blow everyone's minds at the talent show. And in the end, "Round and Round" succeeds brilliantly for the same reason great Burt Bacharach songs work-- because every chord change and turnaround and melodic leap is in exactly the right place. "We'll dazzle them all," goes one line, and it's no idle boast; another goes, "Write the songs that say, 'I like that!'." Done and done

This list fails pretty quickly for me when they list the Deftones new album being worse than Saturday Night Wrist which was a terrible, terrible album.

Baths Cerulean is one of my favorites this year. I'm surprised this album didn't make more noise.
I didn't like Pitchfork's list. They are siding too much on the side of the apathetic, consumerist, hipster movement as opposed to the Arcade Fire, the National movement of deep meaning and empowerment. And they are pretty terrible at reviewing hip-hop.

My favorite Album of 2010 is hands down Gorillaz - Plastic Beach. Took a few listens to get into some of the songs but it's a great album. I went to their show here in Vancouver and they put on an unbelievable performance!
Agreed! My favourite album of the year. Concert was amazing as well.
Wow, only one mention of the best album I've bought in years, let alone this year.
Ray Lamontagne and the Pariah Dogs - God Willing and the Creek Don't Rise
The modern day Neil Young, possibly even better...
Outstanding singer/songwriter.
"Are we strangers now?
Like the Ziegfeld Gal and the Vaudeville show?
Are we strangers now?
Like rock and roll and the radio?
Like rock and roll and radio"
