Amen. I've had two purebred springer spaniels (speaking of wonderful, friendly, smart family dogs). One of them... the poor guy. He was the friendliest, gentlest dog. Then every now and then, without any provocation, he'd go cower under something, start shaking, and if anyone went near him they'd be getting some stitches. Vet's words: "You see that sometimes with Springers. It's the inbreeding".

A dog is a companion and a friend. It's there to make your life happier, and with most of them, doing so is what they love the most. It's not a trophy to show off to your friends, so who gives a rat's ass if it's purebred.

Bought our dog from Petland. However he was one of their Pets for Life rescues. I wouldnt hesitate buying from them again. But I would look for a rescue dog again.

Here is Max. He was 7months old when we got him in November. He is a great dog and has been an amazing addition to our home/family....

Had to bump the thread for this, my mix breed pound dog Jack Russel, hunted down and killed his first rat this week, unfortunatly at the Burger King Drive through in front of a horrified truck driver picking up a King Meal or the like, there was much squealing and blood but my dog dispatched the rat with a classic jack russel shake, I am well proud.

We will return to the hunt after christmas.

Cool dogs. I used to walk one for a woman who lived on the beach. He was always sticking his nose down the crab holes. No matter how many times he got pinched he'd be at it again. I miss that little guy.

I would never get a pet from Petland. Here's our dog, rescued from a couple where the drunken boyfriend threw it 2 stories out a window when it was just six weeks old. Shattered jaw and elbow but still going strong 9 years later with her new friend Mr Beasman the bunny. And no, the bunny rabbit is not photoshoped, he's pure bred flemish giant. Totally awesome pet, but not an indoor animal by any stretch!

No they are buddies. The first day they met the bunny let the dog know who is the boss. All it took was one left jab. We started the rabbit out on a leash so that the dog wouldn't get excited and chase it. (Then your version might have came true). Mr Beasman soon outgrew the leash though.

I had a Flemish Giant named Katie as an indoor pet, great rabbit and super friendly! People could not believe how big she was, she looked almost exactly like yours. Awesome pic.

We got our yellow lab from a great breeder in Northern BC.

I highly recommend them. We received about 15-20 pictures of the entire litter every day for 8 weeks. It is clearly a labour of love for them.

Yeah, I am really surprised at how well this guy is working out. Friendly as you say, not needy like our lab though and not indifferent like the cat. He follows the kids around the yard and runs up to see you when you first come outside. Loves to get the top of his head scratched. He always uses the same spot for urine which makes cleaning his pen easy. He is too big for the kids to pick up and big enough that they will not easily hurt him with rough play.

He stays in our back yard durring the day and has a nice penned off burrow in our underground passive solar greenhouse. The ground regulates his burrow to a decent tempurature range for rabbits throughout the year. He does his share by generating ideal compost and C02 for the plants. He also adds a little bit of heat for the greenhouse. Two bags of pellets will last a year and costs $26.00 at Co-op feeds. He will go through about the same in hay too.

Rabbits really don't present symptoms when they are sick. By the time anything is noticed, it is too late. So vet bills are pretty minimal as there is little that can be done. The big things are not straying from their diets too much and to not over-heat them. They need to have continous access to food and water. We give him the odd carrot which is a good tactic to get them back eating again if they ever stop eating. This breed typically has heart issues at five years. That amount of time was fairly easy for our family to commit to. Our guy is about 8 months old now and will probably still grow a little more.

In an earlier post you indicated they were definitely not a good indoor pet. Just curious as to why.

While I fully support the idea that stores like Petland not be allowed to have dogs, dissentower nailed it on the head. Adopt your pet. I am a hypocrite for saying this, as my dog was from a very reputable breeder of championship golden retrievers, but he was also my dog through my teens and into my early 20's. He died in 2005 and I have not had a dog since. But when the time comes, and it will, I will most definitely be adopting.

I would worry that he would chew up things, especially electric cords. He seems too big to keep in a cage most of the time. You can get them to urinate in a litterbox, but their pellets are a diiferent matter. Outside it is no worry, just less fertilizer I have to add. This rabbitt was specifically bred for outside. Most indoor, pet store rabbits will not do well outside a lot in Calgary winters. His greenhouse burrow ranges from 5 to 24 celsius. On the warm days he gets an ice bottle.

We were able to give him a decent sized area in the greenhouse. Letting him live inside the house at night and outside durring the day would put too much stress on him with that much temperature range. He has an amazing coat of fur.
