That's right Calgarians. We paid a guy from Europe to come give 1500 summer students a pep talk for a 4 month position, over a two day period.

And from what I recall he was friends with the City Parks manager. I forgot how much this upset me at the beginning of the summer. Such a joke.
Well I hate flip-flopping but that is stupid. It all makes sense now though. To get a guy to travel here from abroad they would have to make it worth his while... hence the two sessions over two days. That's something that needs to be brought to someone's attention.

Pics or she doesn't qualify as talent.

A waste of money IMO for employees that will be unemployed 2-3 months later.

Safety training - good idea
How to win friends and influence people and spend taxpayer money in new and creative ways - bad idea

I think the intention is good: To get people that only come work for the city year after year to become motivated and actually do something better than weed-whacking (seriously, 3 or 4 summers in a row weed-whacking? Come on) - thus ensuring years or decades of high tax income.

However, the reality is that 95% of the people at these sessions don't care. They should just drop this and work them to the bone right off the bat.

Oh wait, they can't do that either...I bet they can't even drop the orientation session because of the union. We can keep blaming the city though, even though they have their hands completely tied on almost every matter relating to city workers.

What do you mean 'seriously?' and 'come on?'

I did it for a summer too. Have you ever done landscaping? Not even real landscaping, but mowing grass and weewhacking? Its dead easy. For University students it is the ideal summer job. Its simple, its outdoors and the pay in unbelievable.
