Does anyone know where you can find monthly precipitation numbers? I'd like to know how this month stacks up to a "normal" July...

So if I'm reading that site right, to date we've had 66.4mm of rain this July over 15 days of rainfall. The average for July is 67.9mm and 13 days of rainfall... Apparently this year is not as bad as I thought?!

I understand (fully) that the weather is hard to "forecast", But Honestly!

.... Every day with the "Watches" and Warnings" ??????......
...........And then NOTHING HAPPENS!!

...I'm starting to think Environment Canada & The Weather Network are just abusing their warning system.

They're not going to get berated if they warn us about a hail storm and it doesn't happen right?

I know I'm ranting,,,, But I remember the days when a warning was issued and it meant something was going to happen!!!

It does feel like if there are any type of cloud cover around Calgary, they place a watch. Everything is just happen outside the city. Pretty boring in the NE region.

I'm taking these watches with a grain of salt from now on. Unless there is a giant rain cell heading dead centre to Calgary, I'm expecting nothing.

The biggest problem I have with these "watches" and "Warnings", Is the fact that I've got Plants, Flowers, Veggies Etc.... that I can readily protect at (almost) the drop of a Hat! ..... And when these warnings pop up, I run around my garden getting everything covered..............Then...NADA!

I guess it's more of a pain in the butt!

.....But like I said, these "warnings" used to mean something, Now they seem to be smoke...but no "Fire".

Do you use "Frost Blankets"?

They're kind of the consistency of a bounce sheet, but made for covering gardens(4'x40' 10'x7' 5'5').
I'm not sure how big of hail they could withstand, but, you can leave them on for a week without harming the plants (unless it got scorching hot underneath, I guess). I saved my peppers and tomatillos early this year with them.
I bought them last year at Golden Acre (if that's the one off of Deerfoot & 32nd).

They are really helpful in early spring, as they are supposed to keep the temp up to 8C warmer underneath, yet still allow like 90% of the UV's through.

well I believe last night was a watch, which means theres a good chance a storm can form in the area. if it was a warning you'd see the giant storm in the area.

If they didnt use them when there was a risk but only when there was a certainty of a storm and a giant storm formed and destroyed peoples plants you'd never hear the end of it. better safe then sorry.

Yup, the last two days have just been "watches." That means that the potential for big storms to form is there.

A "warning" means that the storm has formed and may be in your area. One probably doesn't have to go nuts with protecting things until a warning is given.

But, as we all know, Methanolic is nuts, so he doesn't have much choice in the matter.

Out east when you get a watch it means you'll get a storm but the possibility of it being severe is quite possible. Out here it seems a watch means maybe a storm maybe nothing altogether. Sort of a cop out to me having to see every days forecast at 40-60% chance of showers, always translates to "I have no idea I just throw the dart at the board that's my job"

I like football in the rain, but only on a grass field because of the mud. Since it's all field turf, I don't see the point. I'd rather sit in the sun.
