I don't understand how people on this board could call Barb stupid? What is this based on? The fact that she's probably more educated that 70% of this board?

I don't get it? What makes her stupid?

The fact that she probably has zero experience when it comes to the business side of running a city. I don't want a lifetime newscaster anywhere near my tax dollars.

Also, I keep hearing this inane comparison re: Higgins and Ralph Klein, That's just plain dumb.

Higgins read the news that was handed to Her.

Klein reported, investigated and researched almost exclusively about the goings on at City Hall. He probably knew more about City activities than most Aldermen. Talk about a qualified candidate for Mayor.

What makes anyone qualified to run a city? A business degree?

I'd also like to know why she's so stupid. Did I miss something here? What did she do or not do? To be clear, I'm not necessarily defending her, I'm just wondering what I missed tthat she did that was so stupid.

Ultimately I honestly think Barb is probably a pretty decent candidate. She's in tune with the city and has a face everyone can recognize. Will she get my vote? I have no idea... I'll reserve judgement on that until she lays out her platform.

It boggles my mind that so many on here have made up their minds without even seeing what her platform is.

Bronco Dave was far from a bad Mayor. I'd take a 10000 years of Bronco over 10 of Duer or McIver.

Where have I seen this before?

...oh yeah...

She'll get votes on her name and status. Nothing wrong with that, most alderman have piggybacked their way somehow into City Council and learned on the job there too...learn on the job and play the political game, then when they figured that they had built enough clout and internal support up, they run for mayor...in either case doesn't mean they can or can't run the city (such as it is in actually running).

Not that it matters, but she was married to Bruce Coverenton (former Stampeders player), wasn't she?

Wouldn't hurt. A city is basically a big corporation.

Lets be honest here too - she's the first woman to enter the race as well. That won't go unnoticed by everyday voters.

Of course it wouldn't hurt. Do all the other candidates have business degrees?

Considering the misogyny on this site sometimes I'd wager her uterus.

That's where I am right now, too. I can't say for sure that I will or won't vote for her (which puts her ahead of more than half the declared candidates, so far), but I will consider voting for her based on her platform.

It will be interesting to see who is behind her campaign since the rumors were that there were some prominent names trying to convince her to run. Also, Rod Love (the man behind the curtain for most of Ralph Klein's political career) is rumored to be involved in her campaign.

If you're looking for most direct business qualifications:

Naheed Nenshi spent a lot of years as consultant with global firm McKinsey & Co. Now teaches how to run non-profits, which is basically exactly what the City of Calgary is. Also was chair of the Epcor Centre.

Ric McIver worked as a sales manager for a food company before becoming Alderman.

Wayne Stewart was a Shell Executive.

Jon Lord owns Casablanca Video

Alnoor Kassam stole people's money from Nigerian Banks.. runs hotels.

etc.

Considering the previous front-runner was Ric McIver I'm pretty happy that Higgins announced her candidacy.
