Well, it is just as slow w/my gmail account as it is with my shaw accounts. And it is much faster on wifi, nothing has changed there. So it appears to be a 3g issue, and it occurs with multiple apps.

Tyler, did you force a carrier update? If so, how?

Towards the end of my installation, a pop-up in iTunes appeared and stated there was a Carrier Update and asked if I wanted to install.

Yeah I got that too after a while.

You could probably force it by doing a network reset.

http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-...ate-for-ios-4/

This link says that Rogers has been updated to ROGERS 7.1

To check your carrier settings go to "Settings", "General", "About" Scroll down a bit and it will tell you your carrier version.

Yeah, I read about that too. I thought that was for people who upgraded to ios4 (I haven't) but maybe not. I'll try that later.

Is it bad if I did a carrier update with IOS4? Is it restrictive in any way? I would imagine not but just in case...

Well, looks like carrier file 7.1 is related to the new OS, it isn't giving me the option/opportunity to update (still on 3.1.3). I am on 5.0 right now---is that really old?

Did do a network reset, I don't think it made a difference but I'll check it more later.

Thanks for all suggestions though.

Did some digging, and 5.0 seems to be the current one if you haven't upgraded to iOS4.

do NOT pay for ANY unlock for the iPhone. They are all available for free...

See iClarified.com for some tutorials.

note: if you have updated to ios4 you might have to wait a little. (not sure)

Can anyone tell me whether an iPhone 3GS running OS 4.0 that has never been previously jailbroken or unlocked can be jailbroken and unlocked?

What I have found on the interwebz suggests that the phone would have to have been previously jailbroken in order to jailbreak and unlock the phone again in OS4.0.

If it can be done, does anyone know where I can get it done?

Like Jolinar, I'm going to be overseas for a while and don't intend on paying roaming charges.

Thanks!

This is probably an elementary question, but my Googling has yet to find a definative answer. Is a GSM SIM unlock separate from a jailbreak on the iPhone? Most of what I read seems to suggest you have to JB an iPhone if you want to GSM unlock your phone.

I'm hoping an unlock is separate from a JB. I'd rather not have to worry about bricking my phone doing OS upgrades because of an unlock.

They are different, and an unlock generally requires jailbreaking, at least in my experience.

The likelihood of you bricking the phone is pretty small these days. But you will always lose the unlock when you update the OS. The unlock is something that is performed based on generating a customized ipsw (iPhone firmware) file.

I'm running low on patience waiting for a jailbreak for 4.01. If there isn't one by the weekend I think I'm just going to bite the $15 bullet and upgrade my phone and buy data for my iPad.

http://www.jailbreakme.com
navigate to that site using safari on your device and it is automatic.
I have jailbroken both my 3GS and iPod touch. 3GS was iOS 4.0.1 and the touch was iOS 4.0.

Took about 5 minutes to load and the device didn't even have to reboot.

Considering doing it to my 3GS. I just have my 3.1.3 jailbreak running so perfectly I don't see a need to do it. Curious to see how well live wallpapers and things will run with iPhone 4's faster processor.
