You're going to tell me that Phil is in the same conversation as Tiger?

The media reports what they do because Tiger is a generational golfer and Phil is just a great one.

Phil Mickelson is widely regarded as the #2 golfer in the world, which would, naturally, put him in "conversation" with Tiger.

Obviously Tiger is an exception, his talent and dedication are unmatched. But where there is #1, there will be #2 in conversation and don't be surprised if Phil wins his third Green Jacket.

I'm not disputing Phil's world ranking.

The poster seemed to be implying that Tigers stature in the golf world is a creation of the media. That simply isn't true. The media isn't "slurping Tiger". They talk about him because he is far and away the best golfer in the world.

I guess I can agree with both points though.

No doubt Tiger is far and away the best, possibly ever. But there is also no denying the huge hard on some of the golf media have at his every move, which in itself becomes a bit tiring.

Anyways, I couldn't have asked for much more from the first three rounds and I am glad Tiger and Phil are both in the hunt. Should be a beauty tomorrow!

Whether they are a generational golfer or not has nothing to do with the way that Tigers "greatness" is overblown and Phil's so called failures are overblown as well.

How?

How is what tigers accomplished on the golf course in any way, shape or form..."overblown"?

The guy is 34 years old, has 71 PGA tour wins which is 3rd all-time, dozens more victories overseas, and is 2nd alltime in major championships. All this while missing 10 months with major knee surgery.

How do you "overblow" those accomplishments? You simply cant.

Mickelson has 37 career PGA tour (not even top 10 alltime)wins and will be 40 this year. And his too is a remarkable career.....but absolutely pales in comparison.

Exactly. Tiger deserves all the media fanfare he gets. He is simply miles ahead of anyone else in golf and come the end of his career I have no doubt he will have the lead in career wins and majors.

I was talking about in terms of how they are covered during a tournament.

For example announcers always talk about how Mickelson has choked in the past and that whenever Tiger is within 10 shots they talk like he is the favorite.

Tiger certainly has had a great career but in the Majors if he isn't leading he isn't going to win (based on his past) so I find that the media overblow the chance that he has in majors while underplaying Mickelson.

Not disputing that Tiger is great and Phil has thrown away Majors.
They don't overblow the accomplishments, they do the mental side. Saying Tiger is godlike and even after a 5 month layoff, he'll stroll in and win by 10 shots cause 'he's a machine'. And after ONE round, they were calling for Phil to choke, a non-factor in the tournament. The truth is of course somewhere in between.

Hope Mickletits runs away with it tomorrow.

This sounds like me playing around of golf. Although I can't say that I refer to myself in the third person.

I fail to see what Tiger has gone through that the announcers are talking about so much. Going through something would be having your wife and mother suffering from breast cancer. Taking a 5 month vacation from the game of golf is not going through anything, that is just time off.

I really hope Phil wins today. Outside of Jack and Arnie, he has to be considered one of the greatest Master's players of all time with Gary Player. Top Three alltime in Top 10's (13 alltime assuming he places in the top 10 today, only Player's 15 and Jack's 20 are greater). With another victory or two in Augusta, Phil could legitimately go down as one of the top 2 players ever to grace the grounds in Georgia in early April.

Tiger will always be a player who throws clubs and has temper tanrtums on the course first and foremost and a great golfer second. It would be nice if he grew up one of these years, I am sure Robert Tyre Jones Jr. would appreciate it if he showed a little more decorum and respect for the game.

The longest Tiger Woods has spent with one partner is this weekend with K.J. Choi.

Sorry WHAT? You have it all mixed up, he's a great golfer first. Before the scandal you thought of him as the world's greatest golfer, not a golfer with a bad attitude.

Nope, I never thought of him as the world's greatest golfer. Until further notice that honor goes to Jack or Bobby, Tiger is not even close yet. He has always had the worst on course decorum. That is a fact as much as the 14 majors is.

Looks like Phil is on. First hole jitters for Westwood, but he will be fine I think.

Yikes for Tiger.

He's not close?!

4 major wins behind Jack and 3rd all-time in career wins. And he's 34.

I'd say he is VERY close.
