^^agreed! We havn't had a top ten pick in years so we won't have the stars all of the time. You get that through free agent signing which costs more, but I would rather this than three or four years of losing seasons.

While it is unfair to base a player's future on the performance in one tournament, it isn't unreasonable to question Neimsz overall upside.
I didn't pay as close attention to WJrs this year as I usually do, but I'm pretty sure that Neimsz was not on the first PP unit, something that is a regular occurence in Windsor, so a drop in his offensive output is to be expected. Neimsz will be a middle two way winger similar to David moss, but with more natural offense.
However, that doesn't mean that he was a great draft choice. I've always been a firm believer that Carlson would have been the better guy of the two.

Good post.
Based only--only--on what I saw of the WJC I would have to agree. Carlson looks like the superior pick. A really good 27th. Maybe the Flames didn't want to draft another defenceman in the first round.
Ah well, we'll see how it all unfolds.

Yeah thats a bit of a downside with Flames drafting, very terrible record in the past few years in terms of drafting out of the US.

Paajarvi and Eberle for Edmonton could make an impact, and certainly Hodgson for the Canucks. 2 of those 3 were picked pretttty high, and Eberle's small, and Edmonton has a tendency to draft guys with promise that don't often work.
As far as your esimation that our defence prospects are mostly depth guys, I disagree. Pelech is pretty young, and for someone who was drafted not for his offence, he seems to have improved at that this year. His defense is great. Negrin and Brodie both have a good level of skill, and with Phaneuf, Bouwmeester and Regehr locked up, our defense is certainly set for a good long time, especially if we also extend Giordano. Then we also have Tim Erixon who was a pretttty recent 1st rounder. For the record, I'm not very high on Keith Aulie, but some people are. I think it could, and should be betteer, but it's not awful, and other than top 10 selections, I like our system better.

Really?
Nystrom, Moss and McHardToSpell are all graduated US prospects -- maybe our best area of drafting of the prior generation of players.
The current generation of prospects only has what, 3 US guys (if you dont include Mitch Wahl who is a US-born WHL prospect), none of whom are done school. NCAA players tend to take longer to develop and need at least a year or two in the AHL so they are all at minimum 2 years from being busts.

I do too, you know, assuming we're getting our pick back from Phoenix. Which is kind of a strange thing to assume.

I wish i could be that optimistic with our prospect pool but i cant. Even if you take out the top 10 picks of the teams in our division, were still at the bottom with the Wild. I just dont see any players who will be making an impact on the Flames in the next few years. Drafting philosiphy has to change.

During the Fan summit that happened last week, WJC came up.
Sutter said all three played well.. Erixon (down side was.. he broke his wrist), Orito (one of the younger players there) and Neimsz (see below)
Sutter said Neimsz role on the WJC team was a defensive specialist to cover for the other two players (Hall).
This probably explains his point production.

meh, he could have been the worst player in the tournament and Sutter would have put a positive spin on it.

Yea, if you actually beleive that crap of Nemisz being the "defensive specialist" then you obviously didnt watch the games. He was terrible in all 3 zones and was benched whenever Canada needed a spark

If you are just going to lie about what happened why not go all the way and blame Neimsz for all the goals against for each team in the tournament?
He was solid in each three of the zones and played very well if not better in his own zone and the neutral zone.

How can you say he was good in the offensive zone with an earth shattering 1 point?

I said he was solid in all three zones.
The reason he was solid in the offensive zone was that he was able to consistently retrieve the puck, effectively bring the puck into the zone and was strong on the cycle and the boards.
When he had the puck in the offensive zone he rarely turned it over and created space for Kadri and Hall.
I didn't just look at the stat sheet and judge his play on the amount of points he had. If he had picked up 4 second assists I wouldn't be praising him for a solid offensive output, I would still be judging him on actually watching what he did in the tournament.

He was good enough to use his size to create room for puck hogs like Hall and Kadri
