Someone was telling me the extra security measures are for in canada Flights to, but I have not read that anywhere. Reason i ask is i am taking a flight soon (domestic) but am not sure how early I need to go to the airport, or if i am allowed 2 carry ons(which i usually take). With Westjet.
Is this "extra" security at the gates rather then at the regular airport security??
Nothing has changed in regards to domestic flights, you are still allowed to bring 2 pieces of carryon.
I suggest to come an hour and a half before your flight. If you have an early morning flight please come 2 hours.
Well, the terrorists win again. They attempt a horrendous attack, thankfully it was unsuccessful, and our leaders decide to go into frenzy mode. They bring in these ridiculous measures to screen for bombs when checking into your flight instead of fixing the systematic problem of not sharing information with other agencies and targeting those that are the highest risk. All the information was there for them to prevent this person from getting on the plane. This man should never have been issued a VISA to begin with. Because of this failure by the intelligence agencies now we have these screeners patting down little babies and old ladies. How much money do you think this costs us? Billions? Why? Because our leaders are too scared to do what is necessary to protect its citizens properly and effectively. Instead of wasting time, money and resources checking people that are CLEARLY NOT a risk, focus on the people that ARE. That’s right, I said it, PROFILE. We can profile for people for H1N1 but we can’t for terrorism? Come on. It is time we stop with this attitude of worrying about offending people and do what needs to be done.
Rant over!!

Was at Pearson airport at 5am yesterday morning for my 8am flight. I got through no problem and it only took 20min (only 2 people were working the checkin counters).
However, by 0630 Pearson was already jammed with people. The 2 people beside me came at 0630, and barely mid it aboard the plane, which was delayed 20min to wait for them.
Maybe people with explosives background (Crunch?) can comment better, but don't airports have explosive sensors at security? The guy went through the Netherlands and it wasn't caught. I've been at that airport many times, and thought it was pretty good. PETN isn't a binary explosive, and the nitroglycerine used as the trigger would have definitely set off a detector. As an aside, don't terrorist ever do a dry run? this is the 2nd time they tried using PETN (although this time, they got more clever by using nitroglycerine as a trigger, rather than lighting it on fire like the shoe bomber did.
The only way the terrorists win is if people stop flying. It didn't happen after 9/11 and it won't happen here.
There is more than one victory for them. Their main victory is NOT for us to not fly anymore. Their goal is to disrupt our way of life and change the very nature of our democratic existence. It is to install fear into our lives and have the people cow to their idiologies. Flying is just a tool they use to achieve their goals.

They failed at installing fear in the flying public - which was my point.
The only thing they've achieved is making flying more of a hassle with all the extra security.
Heh. I can just see the Al Qaeda back in the cave of Pakistan saying "Oh, what rightous wrath we will bring upon the evil Western infidels by allowing them only ONE carry-on item!!!"

Haha, I should have said instill instead of install. My bad.
Anyhow, they have done far more than make it a little bit more difficult to travel. Like I said, they have cost the tax payers billions. Why do you think this WHI was inacted? The passing of the Patriot Act and other security legislation? The amount of resources that are now wasted screening ourselves is incredible. Every time this happens it slowly chips away at the fundemetal elements of our democratic society because the government is forced to take more control away from the people to "protect" the people. I haven't witness it as much in Canada but in the US and in some cities in Europe, airports look more like military compounds than a tourist hub. There is enough fire power at some of these airports to invade Canada.
As a LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) these measures sometimes help me out in my job. But like someone else posted, for every 1 security measure put in place that works and is useful, there more that are put in place that are not useful and do nothing but erode our way of life.
Also, I didn't say they achieved their goal of instilling fear in the masses, only that it is their goal. They have achieved instilling fear into the government however, and that is evident by some of the measures that have been implemented.

Scary mixture, religion and over amped patriotism from either side. Some aspects of the USA make me very uncomfortable, especially when they are so close to gaining power.
