Can I make a new rule?
One line people. If there are 4 machines (2 on the right side, 2 on the left) that is NOT an invitation to form a line on each side. It's the only fair way.

I hope you noted my sarcasm.
Every year I get older I learn how dumb I was the year before. Case in point, I wish I knew what pentagenarian meant.

Yes... I did note your sarcasm. Thats why my post was made somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
BTW... a pentagenarian is someone in their 50's.

New rule.
When the machine isn't working for you, Falcon Punch it and walk away. This rule also applies to people that obviously can't use the machines, Falcon Punch them and walk away.

I follow this rule, if it helps.
Being a single guy, living on his own I know your pain because I like to go to the grocery store every day or so to have fresh produce and meat. I run into these idiots all the time.
My favorite is watching the little kids push down on the scale when mom/dad/ is pushing in the code for their $5 oranges, that come out to be about $80 because of the kids weight.
Self checkout is the only way to go, I just wish people spent the time to actually learn how to use them instead of picking their nose waiting for help anyways. Just go wait in line if you are that stupid and can't press the F&@$in' screen without some help.

Lots of intolerance and disdain in this thread. Like really, what is the big stress in waiting for the older person to finish up. And why make them feel like crap and pressured with your impatient body language in line behind them?
People don't want to deal with the cashiers, they don't want to deal with the person in line in front of them at the checkout...I'm guessing life is just a constant piss off for you people eh, having to exist in society...

Like my dad always said: The world would be a much better place without other people in it.
However I think it is pretty simple, if you don't have the confidence to turn on a computer, why would you go to a self checkout to use one?

Yeah but they did all the leg work for the thing in their 30s. At 51 the Nobel judges are like "well, that's about all we're going to get out of this guy, let's retire his jersey or he'll start f'ing s**t up."

Well, only sort of. They take away a sh***y job from some 16 year old kid or some 50 year old woman but they create dozens of new jobs for the people who build, assemble and design the machines. And they make a lot more than the teenagers so it helps our society quite a bit more.

Yup, thinking that it takes away jobs is a little short sighted. Since the dawn of time, society has advanced "technology-wise" so we have more time to do something more. On the other extreme (to exaggerate flip's point) maybe we should go back to African slaves rather than using our fancy transportation and construction machinery. Or maybe we should abolish the internet people can social network in coffee shops and go to the mall rather than punch away on calgarypuck or amazon.
If I were to take a guess, the Future Shops, car dealerships, et al will be extinct and replaced by the (old) Dell like services, and cashiers will more or less be replaced by self-service checkout as well.
Ok back to bashing old people (hilarious hi-jack by rubecube btw)

I partially agree because it is for a lot of work they did in their 30's and 40's. However I believe the Nobel prize is awarded to not only congratulate their past accomplishments but to encourage further efforts in their field and maybe, just maybe the Nobel laureates can provide their insights and knowledge to encourage the youth of today.

Whenever I goto the self-checkout, it's because I have emptied the change jar at home into my pocket
But don't worry, even with only coins, I'm probably faster than your average person over 50 through there and I don't stand there looking at the screen like an idiot.

It annoys me that the stores don't take 5 minutes and paint a line on the floor or hang a sign or something to indicate this.

I don't like the word intolerance being tossed around like this. I'm not intolerant because it annoys me that other people are too oblivious or self centered to realize that they're inconveniencing alot of other people.
And it's not a big stress, it's just damn annoying. Some people need to become aware that there is an entire society of people trying to co-exist. Stop wasting my time because you don't care about yours. This goes for old geezers with 50 items and no experience with computers, to slow ass drivers going 20 under the limit and then getting offended when I tailgate, to yappy bank customers that try to have a conversation with the teller while there are 10 people in line just trying to get their money and get on with their day.
I don't need to be tolerant of these people. If they want to take life very slowly, that's fine. Just don't foist your lifestyle on me. You wanna go slow? Get the hell out of my way first.

Ding! Ding! Salivate! Ding! Ding! Salivate!
Buncha Pavlovian biatches! "Oh I'm gonna do all the work of the cashier and the bag-boy, and then I'm gonna congratulate myself on how much time I've saved!" WAKE UP! The stores have trained you to go into these abominations as if they're doing you a favour - but the truth is that it's all to save money and increase profits.
Hire more cashiers and the lines go away too - why aren't we demanding this? Instead you're willing to train yourself as a cashier (which is essentially what you're doing) and then thank MegaCorp for the privilege? Not this faceless consumer!
