To me people who have a certain main stream item that they refuse to eat are being immature and somewhat childish. On some level you should be able to at least try a piece of whatever is being served (allergies pending) even if it's not something you favor. For example I have a friend who is very picky about what he eats, the last time I had him for dinner at my parents house he wouldn't eat half of what my step-mom had prepared. Ever since than he's not once been invited back to my house for anything, it's a courtesy to at least attempt to eat what your host has offered, even if you would never even think of making it for yourself.

I personally actually get really annoyed when people don't eat most "normal" foods. For example my best friends girlfriend will only eat pizza, club sandwiches, hamburgers and pho... I always tell him to dump her because she's not normal.
I will however never eat dog, cat or any insects. Otherwise, anything else is fair game.

Caviar.. outside of the sushi that has the little orange ones on the outside.
My Grandma once made Caviar Mousse, the most revolting taste of all time. Imagine the smell of an old Tackle box in Pudding form..

When I got married, I promised myself that I would eat (at least once) whatever my wife put in front of me, regardless of how previous experiences made me feel about that food.
She made me Shepard's Pie a few months back, and I honestly wanted to give it an try, since I hated it when my mom made it growing up. Even though I never said a word in complaint, she stopped me from eating it after 2 bites because as much as I tried I couldn't stop the gag reflex.

SauerKraut. My friends dad is German and I went to her house for dinner once and he made this. I hated it, but didn't want to be rude so I ate it. But he made so much and didn't want it wasted, so he made us eat so much of it. I could barely choke it down. Won't touch it again. Luckily, it hasn't been too much of an issue.

It is probably some different recipe. I do not see how anyone could have a gag reflex from the taste of mashed potatoes.

I do. The typical whipped-to-a-completely-smooth-texture mashed potatoes make me gag every time.

I have never heard of that before. Let me know if you want pointers on how to stop the gag reflexes.

It depends on the situation. There are things that I would prefer not to eat. However, if I was lost in the woods and starving... you eat what you have to so that you survive... that means you eat everything you know isn't poisonous.

Technically Shepherd's Pie is made from mutton. If it is beef then it has to be called Cottage Pie.

It's my biggest pet peeve when people expect other people to eat food they don't like.. even if they're a guest. Kind of a dick move, why should someone ingest something they don't enjoy?

Shepherd's pie or cottage pie is a traditional English dish which was originally made from left over of a roast beef dish. Usually vegetables such as green peas, carrots and some times corns are cooked with ground lamb or beef, then layered in a baking dish and covered with mashed potatoes to be baked in the oven.

A lot of foods that I would literally rather die than eat:
Ketchup, mustard, tomato soup, relish, pickles, cabbage rolls.
I used to hate onions and peppers but I'm coming around. Just depends on how they are prepared and what I'm eating them with. Definitely never on a burger.
