Snow at reasonable temperatures is better than rain. However, if it's cold enough that you have to use the words "wind chill", it sucks more than rain. A lot more.
The g/f is headed back to Calgary later this week. She hasn't been enjoying the weather reports. I, on the other hand, have been lmfao.

I lived in Portland for a few years and it's amazing what you can get used to. The rain was a nice change from sub-freezing temperatures and snow I guess.

I lived in Vancouver for a few months. Coldest, dreariest, most miserable winter I've ever been through. It's either raining, about to rain, just finished raining or raining with snow on the ground at all times.
I'll take snow over rain and I'd take Calgary cold over Vancouver cold any day... how people live in that city without the excuse of a respectable hockey team is beyond me.

California is also a pretty Democrat-dominant state too

Everyone should drive highway 1 in California at least once! Pfeiffer beach is jaw dropping. Don't imagine they get too much snow there but it is very windy!

I ran the Harvest Half Marathon through Fish Creek with about 650 of my closest friends on a chilly Saturday morning (the snow held off until I'd finished). . . . then did some snowy forest walking with the dogs . . . . .
It seems a little early for winter to be sticking . . .
A few years ago, I ran the Big Sur Half-Marathon in Monterrey/Pacific Grove . . . . a beautiful run along the ocean with about 5000 others. The Pacific Coast Highway is a marvelous experience in sunny weather. Mrs. Cowperson and I took three days to explore the modest distance between Monterrey and LA.

Having more than four months of nice weather helps ease the pain. After living many years in both cities, my conclusion was that I'd find Calgary weather much more tolerable if winter wasn't just so damned long.

Right now is a perfect example of that. While Calgary's gearing up for some snow and sub zero weather, it's sunny and 18-19 degrees all week on the west coast.

Ok it's now -11 with a wind chill of -20, according to The Weather Network. The average daily high right now is supposed to be 12 degrees.
Did we Calgarians do something damning to deserve this? I mean seriously, -20 wind chill on OCTOBER 9??
Someone remind me why we live here again please!!

I remember one year in the 90s, 1995 I think, where it started snowing in September and didn't let up until April.
That was a brutal year.

Looks nice out. I'm going for a run in an hour or so. Looking forward to taking the dogs out to find some larch in the sunshine on the weekend!!!
Embrace your inner winter. It's coming whether you want it or not so you can wallow in Hermitville for six or seven months or you can get out and take what's on offer.
From mid-October two years ago, up at Chester Lake . . . .

Then there was last year, when it was pleasant a week or ten days into November.

Chester Lake is usually our first cross country ski of the year as it is one of the first places to get enough snow. Beautiful picture!

Cow, I echo your sentiments on the Pacific Coast highway. Our family did the trek from Vancouver to San Francisco a very long time ago. It's still alive and well in my memory.
And if you can't embrace the beauty of winter in the mountain/foothills setting we have here...

Winter is nice. Anything below -10 at the peaks of winter is just annoying, though. You can have snow, and snow-covered trees and all (it looks beautiful for sure)... but the temperature should never, ever, drop below -10.
Anybody who enjoys temperatures below that has frost on their brain.

Yeah, Calgary didn't receive snow until Nov 1 last year. I actually had roses blooming well into November last year.
