with a choice of one of the following:

Bell's cheapest plan is $45. Rogers and Telus seem settled on the $50 mark.
Wasn't it the case that even earlier this year the cheapest monthly fee you could pay to have an iPhone in Canada (on Rogers) was something approaching $80?
Just looking at the AT&T website and can get unlimited data for $30. Their lowest voice plan is $40. The minimum you are going to spend is $70 per month on a two year contract.
The degree to which Canadians are getting fataed is less now than it has ever been.

Unlimited data for $30 doesn't seem to apply to this new network, else they wouldn't have $30 for 1GB and more for more GB listed.

I wonder if I get a new phone and renew my contact if my unlimited data for $30 will go with it also? That would suck a lot!

I doubt it. Unlimited WAP data is one thing, but iPhone data is PC data. The data itself isn't different, but the amount used to do the same tasks sure is.

Those are crap plans from Telus, if you want an iPhone from Telus though, just wait until closer to Xmas, should get a better deal than that.
My deal with Rogers on my iPhone is ~$80 after SAF/tax/etc and I get:
250 Daytime
Unltd 6pm E&W
5 nationwide numbers
500MB
Unltd incoming
10000 text
Call ID
Visual VM
And that's not a retention plan, its a plan I got last year in Dec - so, in short, WAIT until closer to Xmas when all the carriers will drop their pants to get activations.

I only wanted data on my iPhone but I had to get voice. So with Fido I got a $15 voice + $30 for 6gb data.

Judging from knowledgeable places like howardforums, no, your unlimited data will not transfer over to the HSPA network, and it's probably best to wait till January/Never when prices might get slightly less onerous.
I should probably talk to a telus rep as my current plan is in theory a total rip off compared to what is avail. (175 mins/25$ +7$SAF +16$ Voice 3 and Call display. Doesn't include text messaging or data.)

I know nothing about iPhone data usage and what I am wondering is if you are connected to a wifi network does this count against your data for the month...or is it only when there is no wifi that it goes against the data plan for the month?

I'm looking at getting an iPhone soon, but now that it's offered by multiple carriers, I'm not too sure who to go with. I'm moving back to Calgary after a few years in the States, so I don't have any recent experience with Canadian cell companies. Any suggestions? Fido looks like the best deal, but, well, I don't have much inherent trust in wireless providers, so I'm skeptical/curious about the coverage I might actually get.

Ive seen a general description of how much webpage views, song downloads ect that 1gb of Data covers I dont recall the exact numbers but it does cover quite a bit of use if you are not downloading large files directly from the internet. Web page views in the 10s of thousands if not hundreds of thousands.
The real catch is how to keep track, how many people actually pay that close attention and is there an easy way to monitor your own usage other then seeing a phone bill rack up for going over or being warned by the phone company that your exceeding use.
Data use has been a real grey area for many people, especially those not really tech savy or to busy to care types. Fact of the matter is that these networks to handle data use are in place already in most populated areas and really seem to be quite the cash cow once the intial investment in towers, equipment ect. is in place.

Rogers now has an online data and minute tracker. In fact there is even a free iPhone app that connects to that tracker and tells you all of your usage stats right up to the minute.

Cool, thanks for the info. I figured there must be at least some kind of tracking that can be done.

Motorola Droid coming to Telus in early 2010.
I'll probably get it if the data plan is decent.

hmm, that's 100 minutes more than I have for the same cost. I have the 6 gig plan. I wonder if I downgraded to the 500 mb of data I could get a better deal on my voice?
BTW the app Fanin80 mentioned is called Mobile Minutes Tracker. It's just been kind enough to inform me that I am 4 minutes over my limit.
