I don't think that's a stretch at all.

I took his post to mean the moderators should expect some "inciteful language" in the thread, but not necessarily that people would be upset about Pelosi specifically. If I'm wrong about it, I'm wrong - no biggie. At the least, I certainly agree with that position as I've explained above: to expect otherwise would be "a little unjust" as I said in my first post.

No big deal, and I'm not trying to be an ass, but I still don't understand how the word moron can be inciteful if the person the word describes is irrelevant.
Maybe it's just me.

I think the point is that the discussion "Is Nancy Pelosi a moron?" is not exactly conducive to civilized debate.

Why? As I said before, if nobody here has an emotional attachment to the woman why would they care if the word moron was used?
Do you believe that reading the thread title raised the ire of some?
I don't.

My point was that a thread clearly like that is going to be pretty heated and there will be some venting, so trying to shift the discussion (which actually was pretty tame imo) into a presumably more 'civilized' register after-the-fact seems a little unfair and contrary to the point of the thread.
|
I said Pelosi was a moron firstly because the article implies that, and secondly because she is a moron.
Care to refute?
Also, pretty sure someone made a personal insult against Palin earlier in this thread. Didn't see anyone complain about that.

This thread gives me a headache. I don't even understand the direction it's gone.
In any event, Obama loves socialism, Pelosi is a bitch, death to America, and all the rest.

That's because Palin is a moron and no one wants to argue on a losing side.

sigh... why do I need to refute this? If you go back and read the rest of my posts, you'll see I'm actually on your side with respect to using such language in this thread (irrespective of my actual feelings about Pelosi). You have a right to start the thread with that title, and I think it's reasonable to expect other posters in the thread are going to use similarly colourful language.
I don't see the point in further derailing this thread. I think I've explained myself well enough. If you would like further clarification you can PM me.

But Pelosi being irrelevant is your personal political opinion, not 'fact'. You can't justify calling someone a moron in a thread title, 'because it's true'... there are people that probably don't believe that, and for the sake of civil debate (if that's actually what's being sought here), a more constructive tone could have been brought to the start of the thread.
You honestly don't see anything inciteful about the thread title, 'why Pelosi is a moron'. Maybe you need to take a step back and look again.
Heck, I think I brought a pretty low intensity level to my original post, I even used a smiley face, and it's called 'weak' and that it's mandating anticipation of opinion or something. Apparently my post incited you more than the thread title incited me, and I didn't even call you a moron.

You left out an adjective. I haven't seen one person under the age of 60 or of a diversified background. This is what I don't understand, (and this is going to be one very unpopular opinion and yes it might be a little ageist), why can't grandma and grandpa let go? They've spent the last 40 years screwing up our country and I would argue the last 40 years is the worst political period in our history. Let us have the next 40 to screw up on our own. I'm not a fan of the AARP they are a bullying lobby and no doubt get things done, but at the expense of others. If I was a grandfather, I would be more concerned about making sure kids in this country are covered with insurance then myself, after all I would have already lived the majority of my life. Feel free to blast away.
By the way I am not advocating taking away their vote, just for them to calm down with the craziness.

I firmly believe that Nancy Pelosi is a moron (or worse), but I do agree that it probably should have been left out of the thread title. Of course, OTOH, perhaps that is what draws people to the thread and promotes a discussion. Still, I wouldn't have done it.

Come on. It's the obvious "I've worked hard for 40 years and deserve to be taken care of" mentality. They contributed what they were supposed to contribute, so they don't see that it's their fault that government programs are insolvent. AARP is an evil force in American politics, but I certainly see their point of view.

I didn't know this:
The Pelosi family has a net worth of nearly $19 million as of 2007, largely from investments. In addition to their large portfolio of jointly owned San Francisco Bay Area real estate, the couple also owns a vineyard in St. Helena, California, valued at $5 million to $25 million. Pelosi's husband also owns stock, including $5 million in Apple Computer. Pelosi continues to be among the richest members of Congress.[8]
- Main Entry: mo·ron
- Pronunciation: \ˈmȯr-ˌän\
- Function: noun
- Etymology: irregular from Greek mōros foolish, stupid
- Date: 1910
1 usually offensive : a person affected with mild mental ######ation
2 : a very stupid person
[Merriam-Webster]
By that definition, I don't think we can say many politicians are literally "morons", not even Bush and Palin.

Also from wikipedia:
Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr., was a U.S. Congressman from Maryland and a Mayor of Baltimore. Her brother, Thomas D'Alesandro III, also a Democrat, was mayor of Baltimore from 1967 to 1971, when he declined to run for a second term.
A family of politicians got rich. Shocking. Send Lester Freamon after them!

I wasn't incited at all. I just don't understand how the word moron can cause people who don't care about the person in question to have some sort of uncivil reaction. I didn't find your post of high intensity at all, I was just responding to the argument you were making.
The venom in this thread didn't come from that word. That's the opinion I am trying to convey.

Pelosi, despite her many shortcomings, has a fair amount of mental horsepower. I don't think the word 'moron' is a good descriptor for her, but to each his own. Its not something that can be 'refuted', to use your words. Also, your posting and the article about Pelosi is not 'proof' of her moronicness in any event (heh, I invented a word).
Palin, on the other hand, fits the word 'moron' almost to a 'T'. And to contribute to some of the low caliber debate already in this thread, and because I don't have all night, I'll back up my assertion by simply saying, it is 'self-evident and not requiring further proof'.

Article that brings together a few reasons why some Obama supporters don't like the health care plan.

We'll agree to disagree then. In my opinion starting a political thread and calling a politician a moron in the title is obviously going to lead to a charged political debate that will incite some posters (and did).
Maybe our definitions of 'civil debate' don't quite match up... in mine subjective terms like 'moron' don't fit, Nancy Pelosi is a moron in your opinion, not in actual fact. Just like I think George Bush is a moron, but I also acknowledge that that's not a fact, just my opinion. He may very well be an intelligent person... I call that 'being flexible' and 'seeing things from the other point of view'.

Huh? I never said she was a moron. Where the heck did that come from?
It is amazing that you guys have made this claim that the word moron in the title caused the venom but not one person has come forward to say that it incited them, including both you and fatso...who in fact have denied that it incited you.
I still don't get it, but I guess you guys have proven yourselves correct by repeating yourselves and not refuting a single point I've made.
