The $3295 I listed it for was a very good price for the market. I was willing to negotiate and drop the price a bit ($3000 was my lowest selling price) but for someone to come up and have the balls to offer $1500-$2000? Come on... get real. I consider offers like that a waste of my time and an insult.

As to your situation, you had obviously overpriced your speakers.
I agree the price of your car was great. The point is that you just forget something unpleasant whatever for you to enjoy your life.

This kind of anger from twenties for small little things is understandable.

Because I have or had a valuable item for sale, that I've taken care of and maintained and that I know was worth at least $3000 or more and by your lowball offer you are telling me that you don't think its worth sh*t.

It would be like me saying (note: I am not saying this to you) that I wouldn't ###### your wife even if you paid me to. Now thats an insult.

Its really nothing to be insulted about... some people are simply really bad negotiators and come off poorly, but its really just part of doing business. Coming in at half is really a stink-bid to gauge someone's desperation. They may still be willing to pay close to full price, they just want to see how desperate you are as the seller.

Sometimes its all the wording of the ad. People see OBO, or negotiable, and they lick their lips and prepare to negotiate as callously as a water salesman in the desert. These same people see the words "non-negotiable" or "firm", and they don't even bother. Might mean it takes longer to get your sale... or not at all though.

Hey Rerun,

If you tried to sell that Rav4 to a dealer, an old, cranky, lily white, Canadian to the bone, non-Asian dealer, would he have paid asking price?

I realize the dealer might not offer less than half, but could you at least quantify (in exact terms), what is an "insulting offer"? Could you also admit that what may be insulting to you, might be "just right" for someone else?

If you get insulted by offers and negotiation, I suggest you open a retail outlet in Chinook Mall and stop blaming the Chinese.

I am looking at buying a used Honda Element. My wife and decided to go to a dealership to just test drive one then to go buy it privately. Generally IMO dealerships sell used cars at a much higher price than a private sale. Anyway, went to look at a 2006 and they had a 2008 demo on the lot so for fun I decided to drive the 2008 which was way out of my price range. Anyway loved the car and humored the salesmen to talk prices. He tells me the car retails for $32k but because it was a demo and had 2,000 km on it he would give it to me for $29k. I just wanted to leave his office so I was relentless when denying him. After much discussion he asked me how much it would have to be for me to buy it so I whipped out the number $24k, again just trying to leave his office. Long story short he said his final offer was $25k... $7k below retail.

Now without even trying I got $7k knocked off of a brand new car and your trying to tell me it's wrong to bargain with someone? The scary part is, if I knew I wanted a 2008 the old Cogent would have taken it for the $29k. Lesson learned.
Yup, I had a similar experience last year when I actually bought my car, I wasn't desperate for the car, so after negotiating at the dealer for their lowest price, it still wasn't low enough for me, so I walked out, thinking the deal was dead. Several days later, they called me up and offered me basically the price I wanted.

It does pay off to make car dealers work for sales.

So you must have sold it to a white Canadian with perfect English? I imagine had a foreigner made a decent offer (ie, the $3000 you were willing to accept), but had a single spelling mistake in their email, their money wouldn't have been any good, right?
Obvioulsy, way too much bothers you, Rerun. Takes not even 2 seconds to delete an email, no need to harp on about it and let it get to you this way. There are more important things to gripe about.

I understand your attachment, but with all due respect, if you're selling it, the only thing I care about is the price. Perhaps someone is willing to pay more for your love and care, perhaps not.

Go for it. It's a free country.

Of course, a master negotiator might make the offer BEFORE he eats the food, or he'll be doing a lot of dishes.

Actually I ended up selling it to a pregnant single mother black woman (originally from Jamaica) for $3000.
She offered me $2800 and we settled on $3000.

Thanks for the advice. I'll write that down and read it every night before I go to bed and every morning while I eat my breakfast. The wisdom on here is just astonishing sometimes.

I can understand why you feel like someone's wasted a few seconds of your day, but I can't understand being insulted by a low-ball offer. I might think "This guy's an idiot" and reply 'no thanks' or delete the email, but I wouldn't let it upset me. Plus, I'd have something interested to post on CP!

Then why come to CP to complain at all? Go to your real life friends who won't tell you their honest opinions and will only feed your need to be right.

Well congrats on selling your vehicle. Thank god you did not waste anytime complaining about some guy giving you a lowball offer on an internet chat forum. That would be a real waste of your time.

YES. Especially if they do not have it clearly advertised that they do so, but even then you've gone through the store and got your stuff (or pumped gas).

If it's clearly labeled I usually pay and then don't come back to the store. If it's not labeled, when it comes up on the interac machine, I cancel the transaction and pull out my Amex, which costs them even more.

I almost bought a second hand car from a guy I met at a chinese resturant, but he got shot while I was in the can.

Lesson learned.

I just have to add, in the same theme, I'm looking for an RV and have seen a number of great deals on autotrader.ca. Everyone of them happens to live out of town, needs to deal with a broker, and -get this- their wife has been promoted and is moving so they must sell quick. I'm just a girl looking for a RV for my family at a good price, thinking that these low priced RV's are maybe beat up, or people didn't price them well, and realizing it's a scam, that's a waste of my time.

You got a good deal AND you didn't insult the salesman with a ridiculous low ball first offer. Congratulations.
Race comments aside and relatively speaking, you're right.
