Well, the Edmonton inferiority complex is pushing these people to whine about things.
Personally, I suspect that they really are jealous of our successful NLL team, but cant bring themselves to admit it to a Calgarian.

Wow, you mention this so often, it's hard to believe that you're trying to convince anyone but yourself. BTW, I don't have a mullet, but I'm sure your long, greasy Kentucky waterfall is more than enough for the rest of us.

Are you aware that many Calgarians come up here to be educated? Or that our school system is praised worldwide for its innovative cirriculum? Or that Edmonton is Canada's only Smart City? Didn't think so.

You say this and then prattle on endlessly that an amateur event like the IAAF championships are bigger than the winetr olympics??????????
Wow.
|
4 billion people watched that amueture event. How many people outside of Calgary give a sh*t about the olympics? No Body!
|
Do you really believe that or are you just trying to stir up trouble?
Who won the gold medal in men's hockey in the last Olympics? Now, who won the women's marathon at the IAAF?
If you can answer the second question and not the first then I will agree that maybe nobody outside of Calgary cares about the winter olympics. If you can answer the first question and not the second then I'll have to conclude that at least you care about the winter olympics, and that's one.

I jumped on the bandwagon in 1980. I joined this website I don't know, 6 or 7 years ago. Whenever it started.
Now with that out of the way, are you going to stick with "nobody outside of Calgary cares about the winter Olympics" theory?
Not much of a hockey fan if you didn't watch that Olympic tourney a couple years back.

I apologize then Rouge....it seemed that you were a bandwagoner from your join date...anyways, ya people in Canada do care about the winter olympics. No question about that, but Does anybody in Africa/Asia give a rats ass? probably not. But they do care about the IAAF, along with Europeans and Americans. Anyways take care; Enjoy the Super Bowl.

The 4 billion viewers includes people who watch it more than once.
Summer Olympics is something like 9 billion.
Winter Olympics was 2 billion in the past Olympics....probably 1 billion at the time the Calgary winter games were held.

I know you in-bred Calgarians have a tough time getting that through your head, but your olympics dont mean sh*t.

4 billion people watched a track meet, when less than 2 billion actually have TV's.
I wonder if you can prove that 4 billion people watched your track meet.

Sundeep, you might get a little more respect if you realized that you do not speak for Edmonton. You dont care about lacrosse... and yet you found the need to totally derail this topic. Go figure.
Edmonton actually has a larger lacrosse community than Calgary does. And while I dont care at all about university sport, if you do, I am not going to belittle your opinion.
That would be because I have something you lack: class.
If you get past all of the rhetoric and bullshyte, you will realize that Calgary and Edmonton are very similar sporting cities.
We both have the NHL. We both have highly supported secondary teams. There are three AJHL teams in Metro Edmonton, while there are two in Calgary, and a third in the metro area coming next year.
We both have CFL teams that are the envy of the rest of the country for our fan support.
We both had AAA baseball, and now we both have NorL baseball.
We both could care less about minor pro soccer.
Edmonton has been successful at hosting the lesser world soccer championships, while Calgary has done well with things like Davis Cup Tennis. On the balance, neither are very important to Canadians.
Edmonton hosted a track meet that the world may have cared about, but North America doesnt. Calgary hosted an olympics that North America cared about, but much of the world probably didnt.
Calgary has an NLL team, while Edmonton would have had one had an owner stepped up before the league changed the ownership rules. As it is, Edmonton will land a lacrosse club within a couple years - if the Oilers or Eskimos step up.
The Drillers havent folded yet, but the owner that abandoned them wanted to put a team in Edmonton. In either case - as entertaining as the games themselves are - the ABA is nothing to be bragging about.
The two cities are so closely related in the sporting world that belittling one is akin to belittling the other.

hey, even you called the CFL bush league earlier in the thread, and you're a fan of the Eskimos too, no? sell any free tickets lately?
who care's if the NLL is bush league? it's damn entertaining to go to. i don't think anyone here really gives a flying ###### if you don't like it...it just sucks that you had to derail a perfectly good topic and turn it into this p*ssing match, again. those of us that like lacrosse don't care if Edmonton doesn't like it. We don't live to please Edmonton. Get over yourself

It's evident....there is no one crying for a NLL team here.
Secondly, don't kid yourself. Edmonton is a sporting EVENT town. Edmonton hosts way more international and national events than Calgary does.
The sucess in those events, is what separates Edmonton from Calgary, in terms of which city is a better sports city.

Sundeep you really need to wake up.
The success of international events is what seperates Edmonton from Calgary!?!?!?!
What!?!?!
That statement is as ridiculous as it would be for me to suggest that the success of Calgary hosting international events is what seperates Calgary from Edmonton. BOTH cities have hosted international events with great success. Your assertion that Edmonton is somehow above Calgary in that regard truly is mind boggling.
If you are really just coming to this site to stir up trouble then please move on. I've counted at least 5 threads that have been ruined by these totally moronic arguments - and your a big part of all of them.

What exactly is contributing to a thread at CP?
Going along with what Calgarians want to hear....or saying it how it is.
I said INTERNATIONAL and NATIONAL events.
In recent years, and the upcoming years, Edmonton has/will host(ed):
World Cup U19
World Cup Mens U21
Champ Car Grand Prix (beating out Calgary for the race)
Tim Hortons Brier (already surpassed Calgary's attendance record, even though no singles tickets have been on sale)
Annual CFR (I don't care...but it draws a big crowd from all over Western Canada and northern USA)
LPGA Canadian Open
World's Masters game
IAAF World's - 3rd biggest World event, with over 4 billion viewers
CJFL Championship game
First ever CIS final four to be played at an NHL arena
I could go on and on...and on

You could go on and on and so could I...that's the problem. These topics have been covered and beaten to death. You can make arguments about why Edmonton rocks and others here can make arguments why Calgary rocks.
What's the point?
Contributing on CP means not repeating everything over and over again. It means trying to contribute to the topics that the thread was intended to be about, and not changing every thread into a Calgary v. Edmonton. It means having respect for other's opinions. It means having the ability to look at an discussion from opposing view points.
This statement by you sums it up perfectly:
"Going along with what Calgarians want to hear....or saying it how it is."
No. It doesn't mean going along with what Calgarians want to hear. The great thing about this board is that it encourages opposing view point. But there is no such thing as "how it is". If you really think because you think one way it means that that's "how it is" then you have a real ego problem dude.

contributing isn't going with the grain. it's not belittling Edmonton. contributing is not belittling Calgary. it's not doing every goddamn thing you can to pump up your city and/or yourself just because you're born there. contributing making good comments that can be discussed in a civilized manner with respect to what the topic is intended to be about.

The world womens u19's were actually turning into a major disapointment until the Canadian team caught lightning in a bottle.
Calgary is on the list of being a host city of the world u21's as well. Wont know until the final schedule is released.
Congrats on the champ car race. The only reason you got it is because of the city centre airport. That's exactly why I figured Edmonton would, and should get that race. Unlike you, I have no inferiority complex that forces me to believe Calgary needs every event at all costs. The Airport is just about the only viable place in Alberta to hold such a race.
Brier - Calgary has hosted it before, and will host again. No advantage there.
CFR < Stampede. Stampede is shown nationally. CFR isnt even shown locally.
Congrats on the LPGA. I dont like golf, and using your logic, I could say nobody outside of Edmonton cares, therefore it is of no consequence.
World Masters game? Dont even have a clue what that is or what sport. Can't be that big of an event.
Your track meet. Congrats.
CJFL. Who cares?
CIS frozen four. Who cares? Once again, using your logic, these last two are of no consequence.
Of the events you listed, the only one that is even on the scope of being a "major international event" is the track meet. As far as North Americans are concerned though, I'd bet most could name more host cities of the winter olympics in the last 20 years than could name the host cities of the track meet.
The Womens u19 and mens u21 would be minor international events at best. But good on ya.
Nationally, the only events anyone cares about is the Brier, LPGA, and maybe the champ car race. We've had the brier, the LPGA will ultimately come to Calgary as well, and as I said, City Centre airport is the most logical place for the champ car.
CFR, CJFL and CIS barely even register on the Canadian sporting consiousness.
Your making a big deal out of a little events does not make them major league.
