And I was going to phone spainair but I only have a cell and no way I'm paying some insane long distance charge so I emailed them as well. Hopefully get more in writing.

My apologies, I worded it wrong. I understood that "Austin" was the rep and that you were reported back what your friend said. I thought maybe the information you quoted was from an email from Travelocity or something. Like you said, sounds like more good news than bad right now. I just wanted to see if we had any reason to weight "Austin's" word more heavily than all the other reps we've talked with.

I'm perusing hotels right now, holy hell these can get expensive. My gf said she won't stay in anything less than 4 star....... it would appear she may be pimped out throughout the trip to pay for that.

Along those lines, if anyone wants to split a room, the guy I was supposed to be going with wasn't able to get his ticket as he booked to late. So now I am in a bad spot where I don't want to pay through the nose for a room that I would only really use for sleeping short periods of time.

Damn, you've got a princess on your hands! I'd still hold off on the hotel booking for a few days just to make sure this is all on the up and up.
Personally, I don't think the island is our kind of place. It looks beautiful, but it's mostly just resorts, and caters to the throngs of British that use it as a vacation spot.
I'm hoping we can get to the mainland and check out Seville/Cordoba/Andalusia. Barcelona is nice too, but we've both been there.

For those that were curious after Dan02 mentioned that he had two different boarding numbers for Air Canada and Spanair, I just called AC and it seems like we don't need a separate boarding pass for the connection to Toronto, just ID and the itinerary.

I'm actually kind of hoping to finangle some way to not even fly to Menorca at all. Guess I should have checked the YYC - Madrid prices yesterday, but I was all rushed and trying to get people to commit to going or not, so I just ended up booking YYC - MAH. It seems like it would easy-ish to just get off in Madrid (if you can work something for your luggage), but I'm less sure about the flight back if you don't actually board in Menorca.
I'm going to have to call Air Canada/SpanAir at some point, but I don't want to rock the boat until I'm sure this is really real.

Same here, we have two weeks and probably plan on spending only a few days on the Island, max. We both have never been to Europe so we wouldn't mind checking out a few other countries.

+1, I'm feeling the exact same way. One of the girls coming has a mother that works for AC, going to see if she can work it so we can get off the plane in Madrid. Personally, I didn't see any of the Madrid deals, someone told me they found the same prices for open-jaw flights between YYC -> MAD and then MAH -> YYC. I looked, but didn't see anything for less than 2 grand.

That's our plan as well. Arrive at the island and hit the mainland after a few days and grab the flight home from Madrid. Waiting to feel a little bit more confident about this before calling to see if this is possible.

Haha. Well at least we're all in the same boat.
My arguement is going to be that I "paid" them (haha) for my flight between Madrid & Menorca, so what does it really matter to them if we want to get-off and then board again 8 days later from Madrid. They aren't losing any money by us not being on the last leg of that flight, right?

I don't know if that would work with regards to bagage as you can't have any bags on a flight without the passenger on the flight as well. I think that was put in place after the AirIndia bombing. I would call ahead to check to see if that was alright.

Yeah, it seems to defy logic, but for some reason airlines hate this. I tried doing the same thing with my YYC -> London -> Dublin deal that I found earlier this year on Air Canada. We have no interest in going to Dublin, and are just using the flight to get to France, which we'll have to catch via, you guessed it, London, from Dublin.
We called 5 or 6 times, with no luck. I really don't understand why they would care, after all, now they have an empty seat they could fill for more profit?

Well, I'd want my bags to come off in Madrid with me. But yeah, "technically" if you're supposed to be checking in at Menorca airport and you're waiting in Madrid for the plane, I can see how it doesn't work.

Especially in this case, you'd think they'd want to recoup a little! I'm prepared to accept that they will probably charge us change fees... but hopefully not any potential fare increases as well. I can imagine it now... "Well, YYC to Madrid is $600US, but YYC to MAH is $96US, so you'll have to pay the extra $504". Ignoring the fact that we're flying THROUGH Madrid anyways!! Totally not logical on their part, but I can see them trying it nonetheless.

If she won't stay in anything less than 4 stars, make her pay for it then!
I'm not making any hotel plans at the moment, if this goes through I plan on exploring and don't want to commit to anything. Spend the first night in Menorca and then go to Ibiza or Mallorca the next day on a ferry.

Airlines hate doing that. I fly quite a bit through work, and if you're connecting somewhere and decide to skip a part of the itinerary they cancel the entire ticket. So if you got off in Madrid, worst case scenario is your itinerary gets cancelled and you have to find a flight home using the $50 credit you got for the flights you missed.
Airlines make no sense whatsoever sometimes.

I didn't see any "cheap" flights to Madrid either. Seems like it was Menorca or nothing.
After some debating about making this a longer trip with stops outside of Spain, we decided to take a week just to relax and enjoy. We're usually "big city, see everything" type travellers, so it'll be a nice change of pace. Plus, for what we paid for the trip, we won't feel compelled to "get our money's worth" and can simply enjoy it for what it is

From the bad news department (on another forum)
Quote:
yooo bra, i got all of that too, and im on the phone raising with the supervisor in india.
the thing is, that it was spanair's mistake and travelocity advertised the information they gave them, but spanair is denying everything and will absolutely not honor the rate.
i dont want to be the bearer of bad news. the guy from travelocity said all we have is a reservation confirmation we do not have ticket confirmation?? or something like that, but i see all the info on the spanair website but thats just for the booking the tickets havent been issued.
Basically it comes down to customer service, and spanair could care less, the cheapest he could give me is $800 for one person return... mmmmmmno thanks lol. i was only going because of the price, not because i actually wanted to go.

Has anyone called Spanair to confirm their flights? Or just the company you booked through??
