Not to sound cynical but

You're right, our justice system takes excellent care of our criminals.

Have you watched Cops? They mostly just drive around and then pull people over to hand out tickets or DUI's etc..... That is until they get a call for a "domestic disturbance" where they can break up an old grumpy couple from fighting over the last cup of coffee.

I think you are proving the point that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Care to elaborate?..........if my observations are incorrect then maybe you can fill us in. What is it that cops do that makes them all courageous heros?
And yes I realize Cops is an edited show.........

You're right, our justice system is a bit of a joke at times - no argument from me. However vigilante justice is not a solution either. I'd rather we work on creating stiffer sentences for criminals.

Well I can tell you that they don't just drive around looking for drunks and natives to throw in the drunk tank. Although if they encounter a drunk native (or a drunk white guy, or black guy, or yellow guy) I don't see why they shouldn't be thrown in drunk tank (not trying to prove your point, so don't get too excited).
Honestly, if you really believe your statements on police, then you are beyond hope and it's not worth a second more of my time to explain things to you.

Oh I don't disagree, but I can really understand the frustrations of the everyday cop. There can't be a worse feeling then arresting a scumbag and watching him back on the street the next day. There can't be a worse feeling then the lack of respect that shown to them, or even better the lack of fear towards some of these acts.
I'd make a lousy cop because I'd be putting big bloody holes in every sumbag gangster, drug dealer, pedophile, rapist and spouse abuser that I could before I sprained my trigger finger from overuse.

Well this event did take place in California -- the home of three strikes, Supermax prisons, 650 death row inmates and police forces not really known for the Sunshine/Lollipops approach.
We have a lot of people who say "our justice system is a joke" and they call for longer sentences, harsher conditions and the death penalty.
California has done all those things. Going by the "law and order" logic, this incident shouldn't have even taken place because California should be practically crime-free by now.

The guy was unconcious after having been thrown through his window in a roll-over.
I'm happy they were fired.
If he had tried to run away, though, I say beat his ass. Especially because he tried to run-down a cop laying a spike-belt.
But seeing as he was unconcious this was totally unacceptable.

Ha ha. I must have seen it on KTLA or something. What a nitwit.
The point remains though -- they are way "tougher on crime" than we are but they have more of it. Just to throw something else in the mix... you don't even need a permit to own a handgun in Alabama. This guy should have been terrified of prison, the gallows and a well armed citizenry, but he still pulled this stunt.

I thought the comments of the Mayor were excellent. He emphasized the good work which had been done to that point, but that the 11 seconds is something they will not tolerate.
Pretty good and clear leadership on that one.

The only thing that I can see that even looks anything like a kick is the first cop slipping down the side of the ditch, and perhaps his boothits the guy in the side before he stops. If the cop was atempting to kick the guy there, it would have looked much different. Other than that, I just see cops surrounding the guy and pinning him down (more than necessary, but the cops didn't know the guy was unconscious until they got there, and really, there's no reason to even check the guy's level of consciousness before he's cuffed.
|
I just watched it again on CNN. Definitely at least 2 kicks made by the officers on the right.
I agree that there is no need to check his level of consciousness until he is cuffed, but it is pretty obvious from the fact the guy doesnt move an inch that he is incapable of resisting.

Are you kidding? So you are saying cops have a right to abuse citizens when they feel it is called for? What if the guy had some sort of a mental problem that wasnt diagnosed? He did something he never should have and deserves punishment. But from the legal system. Not from any vigilantes.

There was a link on that same CNN page about a lawyer getting charged with murder. I don't see a thread on lawyers, yes ALL lawyers, being ######s.

I understand what you are getting at here. But I for one am totally appalled that a GROUP of policemen would allow this to happen. I have nothing against cops and respect 99% for the job they do. I have had dealings with officers that are corrupt and love to abuse their power. But I in no way think this is the norm. It is the exception.
But when you see it happen I think you would have to be a very cynical person to not be upset at watching this happen. Maybe I am taking it wrong but to me it seemed like most people were directing comments to these cops and not ALL cops in general. For sure majority of officers are great people that have taken on a responsibility that very few of us could even handle.

"Mess with cops, they'll mess with you" is not exactly a healthy law enforcement policy.
It's also disturbing that not even one out of the five officers managed to fight the urge to beat a helpless guy just because he really hates him.
