Post for film and video. Although the box can do 3D video. Mainly designed to handle 4K files and 2K files at real time.

The software we run does not support newer drivers for the 5800 (even newer drivers for the 5600 for that matter) and we know the 5600 works. Very finicky software that is ever changing so we tend to stick with what we know.

I should add that the system is 4 x over clocked and liquid cooled. The company that made did a test on a 8 x over clocked system with nitrogen cooling. I will have to see if I can get the performances specs from them.

If you are a casual user, like the other guy says. You are better off buying prebuilt because they manufacture in bulk and you get the savings versus having somebody build you something from separately purchased parts. This day and age, you don't need a custom computer if you are just a casual computer user and not gaming. Any dual core system with at least 2GB of ram will do.

Anyone want to post their HTPC builds?

I'm trying to spec out two computers:

A 'home server' that is always on so it needs to be ultra-low power consuming.

And an HTPC that also should be ultra-low power.

You can always keep an eye out for computer systems at the "red table" at Futureshop. You can save a great deal of money that way. These are usually demos or returns but have full warranty and support still but are 10-40% off.

Depending on your needs, I find that you get more bang for your buck with a prebuilt ACER or something at a Box Retailer or even Wal-Mart than custom assembling one or even a prebuilt bundle system from Memory Express.

Case: Silverstone LC20M w/ VFD
MB: Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L
CPU: C2D E7500
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 4550 PCI-E
Memory: 4GB PC2-6400 XTC
HDD: 2x 500GB Western Digital
Optical: LG Blu-ray/HD-DVD SATA drive
PSU: Corsair VX 550W
OS: Vista Home Premium

I'm running VMC w/ Media Browser plugin and MyMovie backend. I use PowerDVD for Blu-Ray playback.

Essentially, I chose the cheapest parts I could. I went a little heavier on the CPU to address fddshow limitations - no hardware decoding support and forcing the Cyberlink h264 codec which does support hardware acceleration doesn't work in all scenarios.

I just have my Shuttle on the first page. Works as HTPC (and is smaller than many HTPCs) when I want it to. Videocard does S-Video and DVI and I have HDMI adapter. Going to put on an Optical Out when I can find the right one for my model but coax audio is good enough. Have a bluetooth adapter inside but it's unused. For remote I just use the Logitech Mediaplay mouse that is made with media controls on it like volume, next track, previous track, play, pause, media player button, etc. Will throw in a Blue Ray Drive one day. Power used to be 250watt, now 300watt 1U Server Rack PSU.

You can get a replacement front plate that has some kind of VFD display inside it but I don't like a glossy front. Mine is just brushed aluminum.

Alright, getting envious of all the new fancy computers.

Going to build this sometime in the next week.

Case: Antec Skeleton (fracking cool, just have to make sure nobody spills around it)
CPU: Core i7 920
RAM: Patriot 6GB 1333 (3 x 2GB kit)
Mobo: Asus P6T (wanted the Gigabyte UD4P but none in CGY)
PS: PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 (I want modular for the Skeleton... still undecided)
Video: 1 - Sapphire 4870 1GB (might crossfire it later)
HD: Raptor 150GB and WD Black 1TB (not new, my current HDs)

XP 64 bit for now, until 7 comes out. I have 32bit beta for 7, I wonder if I could dl 64bit and use the key.

Will upgrade the HD to SSD when Windows7 comes out. Probably the Intel X25M or OCZ Vertex.

And price matching at Memory Express is awesome. Saving at least 10% with this build.

XP64 was a piece of junk, why are you going with that? I'm running Vista 64 and the only issue I saw turned out to be an ATI driver issue (I was shocked - shocked I say) limited to the 4850x2 in Crossfire mode. Since 9.3 came out, I haven't had an issue.

oh yeah? I've never used it before. I just happen to have it handy.

I'll have to look around and see if I can find a Vista 64bit version around. Otherwise, it'll be running XP 32bit until 7 comes out.

Seems like I should almost wait for that first.
