Oh, well I dunno then - maybe the channels came through the pipes? She had cable at that time.

With the right weather conditions, it could be possible to get OTA from a long ways away. It's rare though.

Just got home, hooked up my antenna, and the game looks marvelous!

As for OTA, I remember watching parts of Rick Steves European Christmas in 1080i that day, so it couldn't have been through the pipes.

I don't think OTA is 1080i. It's still 720p but with less compression.

The US Networks are split on the 720p vs 1080i. I believe all Canadian networks are 1080i.

And I just saw that CFCN has switched to their new higher power signal HD signal. I guess I'll need to check that out later.

Where did you see that? I'm not doubting you; my inner-geek just wants to see all the boring details.

I noticed it when I was looking for something more official about the 1080i broadcasts.

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/show...=81023&page=73

So apparently it happened overnight.

Yup, CFCN is good strong signal for me now.

Edit: And all 4 OTA signals I am receiving appear to be 1080i

Looking at TV Fool it looks like CTS and Omni are the next ones to go digital. Looks like Access will be stopping broadcasting OTA after August.

Somewhat funny- with the new CFCN signal now the weakest digital signal is CBC; when for years they always had the strongest analog signal.

I'm trying to set up the OTA feed for tonight's game. It seems the old antenna I have lying around doesn't work.

Has anyone bought an antenna? Where? How much?

I was at Canadian Tire and noticed an "indoor/outdoor HDTV" antenna for $100, which seems crazy. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems any regular antenna should work when feeding a receiver with an ota tuner.

I recycled the box already and don't know the exact model, but the one I bought last week was from Wal Mart. It was a Philips VHF/UHF antenna in a white box that cost around $26. There was a second model Philips that cost around $15, but it looked more flimsy.

The game looks glorious, btw! I switched back and forth tonight between NBC and OTA CBC and it was like night and day.

I was testing also, and noticed NBC looks WAY worse that the Bell CBC HD too. It seriously looks like widescreen upconvert in comparison, or the 480p that Fox tried to pass off as HD years ago.

Comparing OTA CBC with the Satellite feed left some difference. There are less motion artifacts with the OTA, but I was dissapointed by the lack of extra detail. In that respect, the pictures looked almost the same, with a slight edge for the OTA.

I guess I was hoping to see a drastic difference; something like HD used to be before it was mainstream. That was an awesome picture.

Im still looking for a better antenna ... I ended up buying a $70 one at London Drugs just because it was the only place I could make it to before the game. But, I'll take it back if I can find a better one at a reasonable price.

Yeah, NBC on Bell was terrible so it left no choice but to watch CBC. Bell often does this by putting their resources where there is the highest ratings, so most don't notice some of the crappy HD signals Bell gives us. On the upside they should be shifting to MPEG4 within the year but of course than they will have to broadcast more stations as the regular SD stations switch to digital.

Digital Home CAnada has a forum for OTA broadcasts and a list of suggested antennas.

The HD portion is in the UHF band, so you need the UHF antenna. I friend of mine bout a $70 antenna, then discovered his old set of rabbit ears (which had the UHF part) worked just as well so returned the expensive one.

I built my own HD antenna using a scrap of wood and some clothes hanger.

Here are the plans I used - http://www.tvantennaplans.com/
The hardest part was finding the balun (transformer).

Princess Auto has nice Phillips HD antennas for ~ $30. Works like a charm down here in De Winton.

XS Cargo has a bunch of HD antennas for really cheap too. Many models, you might want to check them out and look at reviews.
