I'm definetly fine with it, becuase 13 pts in 12 games doens't tell the whole story.

He had 1 point in his first 3 games while he adjusted to the new game, teammates, and also went on a pretty dreadfull road trip.
since then he has 12 points in 9 games good for a 1.33 PPg Avg. thats better than Justin Bernhardt, Kyle bortis, and Jason Reese who are all in top 10 in WHL scoring. So basically Backlund, at that clip, would be in the top 10 in WHL scoring. He's playing well and people should be happy. Expecting him to blow the league up and be easily its best player is a little unrealistic as so many differect factors go into that.

People let their expectations get far too out of hand. Frankly I don't really care who leads the WHL in scoring. Look back at some of the guys that finish near the top in some seasons - it's not really a good indication of who will make it to the NHL.

The more important thing is how he is adjusting to the NA style of game and his ongoing development.

Kelowna brought in a heap of new players around the deadline, so it's not just Backlund fitting in, it was a pretty sizable group trying to learn how to play with each other. In the case of the Rockets I'm not surprised that there were some initial stuggles as everyone got acquainted with new team mates a new system, new coach etetera. It's not how they started, it will be how they finish that's important.

A lot of those expectations were fed by Sutter. He has gone from being a strong candidate to make the team last fall, to a below average season in Sweden, good but not dominating in the World Juniors, to a very good but not excellent WHL forward. I kinda wish Sutter hadn't said much about his chances but maybe Quad Cities will be happy next season.

So yeah, my expectations have lowered.

the kids getting points cause he's getting icetime
that wasn't happening for him when be played in Sweden
the decision he made to come and play in Kelowna probably was the best move he has made so far careerwise

I think a PPG is great. The North American game is different from the European game, and it seems like now he's made the transition. Hopefully he plays well down the stretch in the WHL and leads Kelowna to a good playoff run (I haven't check the stats, but how are they doing in there division?)
Do you guys think he's NHL ready next year though?

Sounds like Kelowna fans are very happy with him. I cruised over to "that other board" to see if anybody had said anything about him recently.

"Dominating" seemed to be the theme of the thread, minus Cerebral.

Lmao, what a ###### indeed. This is the guy who didn't like Boyd's chances BECAUSE he went to the net.

Lol, smartguy.

Haha I was just about to reply to your last message saying "Well at least this time, Cerebral didn't say he's going to be a bust because he scores his goals by going to the net."

Mikael Backlund will be doing an interview tonight on the Pipeline Show. Sometime between 7-9. Here's the link for those interested in listening. I'll try to give a recap if there is anything interesting said.

In case you're wondering why there is no archived Backlund interview at the site... I guess Kelowna didn't explain the time zone difference and he missed his time slot. No big deal, we'll hook up with him again in March or so.

We did talk to Keith Aulie recently though: http://www.thepipelineshow.com/media...000:00:00&sn=4

Hope that'll do for now.

A story about last nights game in which Backlund scored twice and added an assist. Sorry about the lack of updates lately. I haven't been to any games in a long while and subsequently don't have much to say. I do know that there is a bit of buzz building in Kelowna about the playoffs and the Rockets chances. It would be nice to see Backlund get a long playoff run under his belt to feel the shift in intensity from the regular season. I guess this will give us a bit of insight as to the accuracy of his "big game player" label.

As a Canucks fan, you'll probably not dig my analysis, but anyways...

He had a great game last night...he shot is a cut above 90% of those in the WHL. First goal was a sweet feed from Almond and an even sweeter shot. Received the puck on a straight-ahead pass from Almond and immediately got the shot off. 2nd goal was a great shot, low stick side, though the defender completely blew a tire on his pivot which allowed him to walk right in on the goalie. He seems to have stepped up his game the last bit.

Thanks. Always good to get different perspectives.

Yeah, he's been injured the last couple of games. "Upper body" I believe, they haven't said much else...

He didn't play todays playoff game according to game sheet. Must be more than minor to sit out a playoff game.
