With Brathwaite and now Wamsley off the board, I'll make it three straight goalies selected:
With its 3rd round pick, Team Harvey the Hound is pleased to select TREVOR KIDD.
Although he will forever be known by Flames fans as the guy Calgary drafted instead of Martin Brodeur (in fact, Calgary traded up with NJ to select him at 11th overall, whereas Brodeur went 20th), Kidder was steady as Calgary's starting goalie for four seasons during the 90's. He is fourth in Flames history with 72 wins, had a GAA of 2.83, and by far had the coolest mask/pads in Flames history
With its 4th round pick, Team Harvey the Hound is pleased to select PHIL HOUSLEY, D.
In 5 years with the Flames (over two stints), Phil amassed 238 points (50 G, 188 A) in 328 games. Although his best days were with Buffalo and Winnipeg, Phil is ranked 5th all-time in Flames scoring amongst defencemen.
The Puck Was In!!! is happy to fill out its forward line with a player that will help Langkow guard against odd-man rushes and make sure no liberties are taken while Kenta puts the biscuit in the basket, Tim Hunter.
From Wiki:
He was on the Flames' 1989Stanley Cup championship team, and also appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1986 with Calgary....During his playing days, Hunter was known for his fierce style of play, ranking him among hockey's unwritten list of elite enforcers during the 1980s and 1990's. He also was a quality defensive player and penalty killer.
In his 156 games wearing the Flaming C, after transfering with the franchise from Atlanta before the 1980-1981 season, Pekka collected 28 goals, and 96 assists for a whopping 124 ponts. He currently sits 9th on the Calgary Flames all time list (not the franchise list) of defensemen in scoring, 128 games less, and only 61 points less than the beloved Dion Phaneuf (just to put his two seasons in perspective).
The Flames saw him as the defensive equivalent to Kent Nilsson, a skilled European puck wizard. The defenseman gave every sign of fulfilling that promise. His thirty points and +22 in 1979-80 were respectable in both areas. The hockey tactician had taken his rookie NHL year as a chance to get used to the closer quarters and hard hitting. The results paid off with a second season effort of 56 points and a further 6 in the playoff, as Calgary stopped just short of the Finals.
Rautakallio had his best personal season in North American in 1981-82. His 17 goals and 51 assists left him a dozen points better than his previous best. Pekka was also named as to the All-Star squad, the first Finn to be named to the mid-season classic. At the end of the season Rautakallio decided to leave the NHL behind. He found that his children were loosing touch with their language and his oldest was at risk of not being accepted to the academic program in the Finnish school system. "It made me feel happy to know I made it in the NHL. I don' t feel I had anything to prove after last season. Everything I would have done in the future would have been a plus," said Rautakallio. Pekka Rautakallio played five seasons with HIFK Helsinki before winding up his playing career with HC Rapperswil in Switzerland.
I wonder how good he could have been had he stayed...
With the 37th pick in the CP All-Time Flames Draft, StrayBullet selects, Cory Stillman.
Most of his major career accomplishments were made after he left the Flames (Including winning a Stanley Cup against us), but I remember Cory Stillman being a major cog in the Flames offence during the 90's. 7 seasons, 109 goals and 235 career Flames points, Stillman helped break in who is going to be considered the Greatest Flame ever.
I wonder how good he could have been had he stayed...
Thanks TVP. By the looks of it, a lot of us in our mid to late 20s, who have a hard time remembering the Flames before they won the cup, would have easily remembered Pekka without having to do research on the guy.
By the description, could you imagine a Nilsson-like dman paired with Chopper? I know I'm referencing a guy who is pre-Cup, but from what I heard about 'the Magicman', he was dominant, and amazing. Would have loved to have seen that from the backend as well.
Could have taken more house hold names, but I was quite impressed with the numbers of this lesser known.
I remember way back when Pekka Rautakallio was playing for Calgary. A certain media guy who disliked Europeans was ranting about him. Went something like, "that guy, that Rauta...Rauta...Rauta fellow..." He just couldn't bring himself to pronounce it.
This long before he regularly started mispronouncing European names intentionally.
