He does - but it's really more of a cry for help than for style purposes.

I've always been curious: do many posters nominate their own posts for skill? I'd love to be the skill giver or mod who gets the PM and the person is reporting their own post.

It'd be an automatic blue square!

This may have been mentioned before, but wouldn't it make sense to allow "post thank yous" as the means of boosting skill? You get recognized by enough posters - you get a bit of skill.

Nothing wrong with a thank you - but as an official way of handing out skill it would clutter up a lot of threads.

It has happened - though not a lot. And it doesn't work.

Pretty much negates it. We want others to be the judge of what makes a good post....and if the post is that good typically someone else does notice.

Not if you implement a system where you have the option to give either 'good' reputation to a post, or report it, where the mods can then decide whether or not its worthy of a red square.

The reputation would then show up in the bottom of the post.

I think there is a lot of red square material that is missed. And obviously just 'reporting' it doesn't work.

I don't see why its necessary. We have a vehicle in place that allows people to provide recommendations for posts they like/dislike.

There are also technical challenges for doing anything more complex.

If people really are sincere about their desire to be involved - the opportunity is there for them. Step up.

The point is that everyone else sees what has been 'repped'...and what hasn't.

I don't think people know what exactly will give you a red square.

Our policy has always been stuff like that is private. It's all well and fine for people that get red squares, but on the other side - I don't know if people need to see what posts get blue. That should be private.

In fact I imagine if we opened it up like you describe we'd get even more complaining. We actually get it now anyways. I can't tell you how many times I've got a PM from someone saying "how come so and so got a red square for this post".

Somehow people think they can see what gets repped.

I'm not saying that people who get 'repped' by other posters should automatically get a rep point, but if a mod goes through the thread is notices that a poster made a point that 20 people said they agree with, well chances are he should get a rep point.

Or something like that.

Comes down to the same problem for us - trying to read all threads and all posts.

The nice thing about reporting a post is that it gives us a red flag to notice that someone has liked/disliked a post.

Relying on mods to go through all the threads to find posts people have flagged just isn't going to change much...particularly on the off-topic board where the threads stretch for pages and pages...and quite often on stuff I have no interest reading.
